OE email migration - Search indexing all
After my Outlook Express migration to WLM tonight,
I was running Process Explorer because there appeared to be a lot of disk activity - with no programs running... It looks like Win7 Search Protocol Indexer might be going thru my 10 years of emails and indexing them... For later searching ? -- / _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ No Good Deed - Goes Unpunished |

The indexer has controls. You can try to use them. But you may not be entirely happy with the results. Like all great software, the software tends to do whatever it pleases. When you tell it not to index content, you will still see it spend hours indexing the content. It's like a disobedient child. The only way to really stop a software like that, is to uninstall it. Window 7Control PanelIndexing OptionsModify A dialog box with a two panes top and bottom will appear In the bottom, click on Windows Live Mail, then expand the WLM folders - Uncheck the folder you wish to exclude. Note: Unchecking any folders in WLM may reduce its search within the program. Regarding newsgroup messages still in your OE store location. Unless you need to archive those messages in WLM for use (e.g. search)it usually not appropriate to import them for a few reasons. - they can not be moved or copied to a news server newsgroup folders - messages not previously downloaded/read may no longer be accessible on the news server - adds bloat to WLM's own index process A few cautions 1. If you imported a ton of messages, WLM will continue to update its index until it completes. Do not interrupt the process unless you are certain all imported messages have actually been indexed. If you have 10 yrs it would be prudent to check quite a few messages from each year to ensure the content shows in the WLM. 2. Do not move messages from WLM/s Storage Folders/Imported Folders - Copy them. The former forces WLM to perform two opposite indexing functions (re-index for the new location and reindex to delete the old). It is much safe to copy first, allow it to index the destination, then delete from the source location. 3. Never shutdown WLM while indexing. Doing so can cause corruption in the message and its index. 4. WLM by design (default) compact the entire index and message store every 100 times it opens. When a large volume (size, MB, GB) of messages are stored, it would be wise to exit WLM by first toggling the Offline button (off, then on) prior closing via the Menu (Alt F/Exit, the X button upper right, or any other route) -- ...winston msft mvp consumer apps |

Programs | Administrative Tools | Services | Windows Search Right click | Properties | General tab | Startup type Change to "Disabled". That's it - no more Windows Search. If you want to, you can delete the vast database that Windows Search has created by nosing through your files. Its at: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\ Windows\Windows.edb If you don't need to index file contents, a good alternative is Agent Ransack (http://www.mythicsoft.com/agentransack). It's now usually referred to a "FileLocator Pro Lite" as the name "Agent Ransack" seemed to scare the horses, if you know what I mean. :-) -- Jeff |

FileLocator is fantastic at finding files by name with all manner of modifiers for dates, sizes, etc., but it does NOT index the contents, so if you are looking for stuff -within- files it's much slower than Windows Search. They both have a place. |

Oh, you /think/ you're restricting what it looks at. It passes all your most secret stuff into MS's Cloud store. It's /so/ much easier for the NSA that way.. ;'-) -- Jeff |
