Default Help! virus protection won't load.

okay, i dont know alot about computers or about these newsgroup help things but i do know i need help. im on a windows xp home edition. ive got mcafee virus protection. anyway i was on the internet when everything slowed down by a considerable amount. it w
as then i realised that the virus protection thing had been turned off, so i figured a virus/worm/bug/whatever must have got in, so i tried loading mcafee several times with no luck and the same for the virus scan. a couple of times mcafee came on for a sp
lit second then disappeared completely even from the toolbar at the bottom, i have the same problem with task manager. is this the virus doing this and what shall i do, because i cant deal with it unless i can load up mcafee or virus scan. please help.

I would try using a different anti virus program ( my vavorite is Norton Internet security 2004) also use spybot v1.3 to make sure there is no spyware on your comp. you can get it for free at www.download.com
