Shortcut for Notepad
It used to be it took seconds of make a shortcut to wordpad, something I use
all day when working. No more. Some window opens asking for the location but there too many to type there. WTF? How the hell do I get a shortcut made to keep on my taskbar? No, Googling as no help as usual. |

This almost always (note the weasel words) works for me: 1) open up that annoying tiles screen by clicking on the start orb. 2) scroll and scroll until you find the program you want on the task bar. 3) right click on the icon, then select "pin to taskbar". It is alright if you cuss a bit. As Mark Twain says: The idea that no gentleman ever swears is all wrong. He can swear and still be a gentleman, if he does it in a nice and benevolent and affectionate way. --Mark Twain - Private and Public Morals speech, 1906 HTH, -T |

"Some window". And what does the window have inside of it? What content does it display? "There are too many to type there." Too many what? "Keep on my taskbar". Do you want to pin Wordpad to your taskbar? If so, are you trying to pin a batch file (.bat) that calls Wordpad, a command line that calls wordpad and with arguments, or just the program? Or do you want to have a toolbar in the taskbar with shortcut(s)? Googling only works if you have some idea of what you are looking for and happen to choose a decent set of search criteria. Just like Google, I don't know what you are really trying to ask for help. |

This takes only seconds: * Open the start menu. * Scroll down the LEFT SIDE of the start menu to the folder "Windows Accessories". * Inside "Windows Accessories", you will find the WordPad shortcut. * Right-click on the WordPad shortcut and choose "More Pin to taskbar". Thank you, sir, you've made my morning, which is quite some feat considering it's nearly dark o'clock in the afternoon. To make a Notepad.exe shortcut (admittedly, I'm using Win7 but WinTen shouldn't be all that different), I right-clicked on the desktop, picked "NEW/SHORTCUT", typed "notepad.exe" (without the quote marks) into the "location of thingy" field, called it "notepad and pressed "finish". To get it onto the Taskbar, I just clicked on it to grab it, dragged it onto the bar and let go. The slowest part of this was the typing. There's no need for complications. Windows has them all in its pocket so we don't need to do them. J. |

Type "wordpad.exe" (no quotes) in the "location field. "Next". Type "Wordpad" in the "name" field. Click on "Finish". Left-clicky and hold the new icon. Drag it to the taskbar. Drop it. You now have a Wordpad.exe bootery icon on the desktop and on the taskbar. Repeat for all sorts of loverly stuff. Windows can find these things for you if you give it half a clue. something I use all day when working. No more. Some window opens asking for the location but there too many to type there. WTF? Type "wordpad.exe" without the quote marks. Windows will find the thingy for you. Windows is bloody bloated with tricks like that. It's why Windows now comes on a fifty TeraByte drive instead of three floppies. I rather liked it when it came on floppies. Life was ever so very much easier. How the hell do I get a shortcut made to keep on my taskbar? No, Googling as no help as usual. You could try https://www.startpage.com with the search key: "how do I create a notepad icon in windows ten taskbar" again lose the quote marks. When I did that, I got many, many good pages of easy-to-follow tips and advice. A search engine is only as good as the key. You seem a bit confused as to whether you want Wordpad or Notepad shortcuts. They are different programs. He could create a separate icon for each one. And one for Word, one for Excel, one for .... Then he could create a new folder called "MicroStuff" on his desktop and drop all of those lovely starty things into it. That way he would know where they all are even should he cover his desktop with icons as some people are prone to do. The last step is to drag the folder to the taskbar so it pins. With luck, it pins an alias and the "original" is still on the desktop so he has *two* routes to it. More if he goes by way of Explorer or some Explorer substitute file manager. Windows has *loads* of ways of doing many things. It's up to each of us to find the one *we* consider to be the easiest. J. Note: Yes, he could create a folder for "AV-programs", one for "Video stuff", one for "Writing files to places", one for "Miscellaneous toolkittery bits" and one for "letters from Suzie" with starty icons for each on his Quick Launchy type taskbarry bit. Windows has *room*. Of course, he could also do most of that in Mac OS X or *Nixxy but I won't mention those as this is a Win-newsgroup. J. |
