How big is your computer room? Mine isn't that big... You don't need a lot of room with laptops and tablets. They stack like books on a bookshelf. Just reach behind you and grab one like a book and pop it in the dock. Press the power button and there you go. How big is your bookshelf? Mine isn't that big... -- Gene E. Bloch (Stumbling Bloch) |

There are four shelves and I would guess I can get 20 laptops/tablets per shelf, so it would hold about 80 total. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Kingston 120GB SSD - Windows Live Mail 2009 Centrino Core2 Duo T7400 2.16 GHz - 4GB - Windows 8.1 Pro w/Media Center |

By chance, do you have a credible cite that supports your claim? It's just a default, you can set whatever you actually want. That's a bit misleading since it implies that you can decide to use ONLY the Desktop UI. |

Anyway one of my Gateway M465 with Windows 8 and I updated it to 8.1U1 automatically defaulted to the desktop when you boot. And I did find where you could change it if you didn't like it. I have two tablets running Windows 8, one is touch and one is pen enabled. I didn't upgrade them yet. It's just a default, you can set whatever you actually want. That's a bit misleading since it implies that you can decide to use ONLY the Desktop UI. I am running ModernMix on that same machine and the Metro side is totally gone. As I have it set to use the desktop only and even Metro Apps open up on the desktop in a window. The Start screen is still there though. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Kingston 120GB SSD - OE-QuoteFix v1.19.2 Centrino Core Duo T2300 1.66GHz - 4GB - ATI X1400 - Windows XP SP2 |

"That flexibility remains unchanged in this Update but going forward, there are new defaults – as mentioned before, Windows 8.1 Update now boots to the desktop as the default unless the device is a tablet form factor." It's just a default, you can set whatever you actually want. That's a bit misleading since it implies that you can decide to use ONLY the Desktop UI. If you set desktop mode, the Modern UI is still used as a launcher, but just a launcher unless you choose to launch Modern UI apps and it only appears when/if you call upon it. I often go hours at a time without seeing it, if not days. -- This post is double ROT13'd for extra security. Oh, well that's disappointing. I was hoping when you said "you get the desktop interface by default" you meant much more than simply booting to the desktop. Booting to the desktop has never been a real challenge. It's staying on the desktop that seems to be out of reach, at least for me and most people I know. It's just a default, you can set whatever you actually want. That's a bit misleading since it implies that you can decide to use ONLY the Desktop UI. If you set desktop mode, the Modern UI is still used as a launcher, but just a launcher unless you choose to launch Modern UI apps and it only appears when/if you call upon it. I often go hours at a time without seeing it, if not days. Again, quite disappointing that you consider hours or days as a benchmark. I'd prefer to stay off of the Modern UI completely. Thanks anyway, but I was hoping you had some new information. |

http://www.techradar.com/news/softwa...umours-1029245 What the collective has heard exactly is that a prototype version is in the works in which a barebones version of Windows 9 will be available for free. For additional functionality, users would have to pay up through a subscription. I wonder what will be included in the "additional functionality" - web browsing? wordprocessing? email? Will it be possible to install non-Microsoft software without complications? If it turns out to be free to install but expensive if you actually want to use it for anything, then it will only be "free" in the sense of those free extras that companies sometimes offer but which you have to buy something to obtain. I won't be waiting with bated breath. According to the leaker group, the core of Windows 9 will live in the given system's BIOS, while the rest of the OS will reside in the cloud, ready for picking via various apps and services. (Exactly how much of the standard Windows functions would be left out is what's worrying about this rumor.) The more I read this sort of thing, the more appealing Linux becomes. Rod. |
