XP Boot Freeze with even Safe Mode
Woot!! My system is back up and running. The website
that helped me with my problem is this: http://www.digitalwebcast.com/2002/0...torials/cw_boo t_toot.htm Seems if you are having any type of boot problem...refer to this site and it should get you back up and running. It basically wipes out all your current boot files (one of which is probably corrupt) and help your load a snapshot of an older restore file. Restore files are made fairly often so you don't really lose anything going back to them. This really helps if you think your only option is a reinstall. Saves lots of headaches!! Enjoy! -----Original Message----- My computer started freezing after the XP loading screen. It would do the loading screen, then blank out for eternity. Normally it blanks for like a second and loads the desktop...but now no desktop comes up. I thought no big deal at first, so I rebooted trying to go in using Safe Mode (all of them). It will start booting all the drivers and then hang (not sure if it's the last driver or not...but the last one is atisgkaf.sys). Now I'm like "Hmm...". So I unplug everything except bare neccessities. No avail. I'm still not bum'ed out yet...so I pull out the XP disk and start up from there. I go into Restore Console and start looking around. I ended up copying over ntlde and ntdetect.com because some website said to if you're having boot problems. No luck. So then I fixboot. No luck. So then I fixmbr. Grr...no luck. Nothing is working!! I really would like some files off the hard drive. I could really use any advice on how to grab the files so I can just reformat and start new which is no problem. Or a way to get the system back up and running so I can make a backup cd of some files I really should keep. I would just put the hard drive in another machine and copy that way...but unforunately this is a laptop I'm having problems with. Thanks in advance for your genious!! . |

My question: has anyone been able to solve this ? I have not seen any solution around (the link is not working -any longer- ?) , even though several people seem to have experienced the same phenomenon, even recently... Kind regards, Phil |

XP Boot Freeze with even Safe Mode
I have experienced this same problem on a P4VMM2 motherboard which has the
via chipset on the computer. I have even formatted the computer and installed Windows XP service pack 1a and 2 only. Same problem. Computer installs Service pack 2 but after reboot I am unable to get into the machine-freezes at startup even in Safe Mode. SP2 installed fine on my collegues Acer Aspire notebook but the performance has drastically decreased. He requested that I uninstall this until a later date. This is exactly the issue I am having! I have searched the web and seen several threads describing this problem, but none that include a solution! (Including the link posted earlier in this forum - no help there either now...) I have XP & SP2, this problem only began after I downloaded Windows updates yesterday, so presumably something in the new configuration is incompatible now. However, I am unable to get into Windows in order to remove the latest updates. Trying to restart "with last known configuration that works" fails at the same point too. Any suggestions will be gratefully received, as I am tearing my hair out here... |

Try resrarting in safe mode under DOS. That's the simplest system (other
than starting from the Windows CD). Then run dskchk/f. I've had a similar problem, and in my case it always seems to be associated with an error in the indexes or security descriptors. If that's the case, dskchk should be able to find and correct the errors. What I don't know is how to keep the errors from recurring. (In my case, they reccur about once a month!
