Internet explorer icon not working at desktop

have win XP Pro SP1 and Internet explorer v 6.0
At the desktop, doubleclicking on the Internet Exploreer
icon
error message iexplorer.exe missing
but i am able to get on the web if right click on the IE
icon and go to properties,settings,view objects, favorites
once on the web iam able to browse also
