Just so you don't misunderstand me, I'm telling you that you have an as yet
undocumented and non-reproducible problem. All known, reproducible causes of this problem so far were fixed by SP1 or by the reg patches I posted. The fax developers at Microsoft are a dedicated and hard working bunch who watch these groups closely to look for new or reproducible problems that they can fix. That's why the steps to repro are so crucial when a seemingly new problem arises. So far, we don't have any. Until they can reproduce the problem, they can't begin working on a solution. When you go to Tools Fax Printer Status... in the Fax Console, what do you see? -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Glow" wrote in message ... ok thanks anyway guess ill have to make them call ahead if they going to send a fax on days I am not expecting them. or maybe dig out supervoice again oh well. Everything in the console works properly the files move from incoming to
inbox as they should and indicate their status the problem is the monitoring. no alerts no response from fax monitor. I do understand what you are saying I do realise that you can't help on a problem you do not yet know much about. I can't change a light bulb until I know it has blown either. Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data
Ahhh... at last i see one more person like me having
problems.. here are the possiblities Iam also seeing the same, but it happened after i relocated the modem to a different pci slot. it appears that monitor can only show activity on one modem (if you have more than 1 on your system). THe article suggests us to use MMC (need to figure out where that is on my XP home install.. think mmc is only on windows professional) some modems have built in processors and they typically dont report status back to system software, so you cant monitor whats happening... if it worked before and not now possibly you have more than 1 modem in your system, or maybe switched the slots around after installation... Iam also waiting for a solution, but just a few possibilities. keep me in the loop if you get the monitor to work... ashok -----Original Message----- What changed was I reformatted my HDD a couple of times and reinstalled XP I had to reinstall from a new disc as my children destroyed the other one the new disc was purchased. it is effectively a new computer. the rest of the software I am using on my computer now compared to then is all the same isn't any logical reason it isn't working. with this install I have had problems with my email clients as well it seemed about two weeks after I reinstalled most registry keys for both outlook express and incredimail vanished under the email heading this has since been fixed by reinstalling incredimail however outlook still does not seem to have regained them since removing and adding it via windows componants. it is recognised as a newsreader but not as an email program. Fax monitor in XP not responding or displaying any data
Excuse me for interjecting. My fax monitor (XP Pro) was working just fine
until--yes, you got me thinking that Norton Personal Firewall (and/or Norton SystemWorks) was the problem--until I installed that Firewall. Thus, with your heads-up, I found this: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT... bar_sch_nam. Much obliged. "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... So do we now have all the steps to repro, or is there anything else you can think of? How did this installation differ from the one that worked? Have you checked to make sure the problem isn't with Norton Internet Security? Details on that on are available he http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...f?OpenDocument -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Glow" wrote in message ... no you can actually select what you install as part of the installation process you simply need select a custom installation. "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... I don't understand. The Fax Service is not installed by default with the OS. It must be installed expressly from Control Panel Add/Remove. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Glow" wrote in message ... The fax was installed with the operating system I simply clicked on add in the printer window in able to use it. "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... But not disabled before you installed fax, right? And you installed Fax after SP1? -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Glow" wrote in message ... Russ as I mentioned earlier SP1 was included in the disc I have which means it was installed before I even went near Norton. (and I usually disable Norton during the installations it only runs while I am downloading) "Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook]" wrote in message ... Oh, ick. No wonder. That's why the steps to repro are so important. Next time do your Norton Security last. It should never be running when you're installing updates and core software. There's no telling what might have gone awry. I'll post the reg patches that fixed this problem before SP1 was released so you can try them. I'm not sure you ever got a complete installation of SP1. Certain registry keys on which Fax depends can be wiped out by certain update or repair operations in XP. Try the following: 1. Save the attachment to this post (or paste the text between dashed lines at the bottom of this message into Notepad and save it). 2. Rename it RPCProt.reg 3. Go to Windows Explorer and double-click on RPCProt.reg - this would apply the key to the registry (assuming that Merge is the default action). 3a. If double clicking the RENAMED file opens Notepad or WordPad, go to 'Start|Run', type REGEDIT, click OK, then go to 'File|Import' and navigate to the file. 4. Stop and then restart the fax service. The contents of the attached file: -------------------------------------- Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientPr otocols] "ncacn_np"="rpcrt4.dll" "ncacn_ip_tcp"="rpcrt4.dll" "ncadg_ip_udp"="rpcrt4.dll" "ncacn_http"="rpcrt4.dll" -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Glow" wrote in message ... Well SP1 is already installed there are no available updates. The other week was not an update or repair I completely reformatted my HDD and installed from scratch.. any other suggestions....? it is not the initial releaseit is in fact Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 1 is included on the disc. what is wrong with this thing..... -----Original Message----- A number of standard update and repair procedures disabled the Fax Monitor in the initial release of Windows XP. These problems were fixed in Service Pack 1. Make sure you apply SP1 if you notice this problem. -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Glow" wrote in message ... Ok here is the problem I use my fax to both send and receive sucessfully I have been using XP fax for the last six months. since I did a clean install a few weeks ago however The Fax monitor shows absolutely nothing in the way of activity. it opens up it gives me the options to answer now or hide etc. but shows nothing if you extend the display window. I have double checked all of my settings I have it set to open automatically when sending and receiving yet it does not open if a fax is being sent or received. (this can be quite a hassle)it will only open manually yet it answers a Fax whether it has been opened or not (set to do so automatically because without the monitor responding I have no way to manually receive it conviently before my message bank kicks in) There is the problem I have to disable it otherwise it interupts my phone calls. and if it does that i then have to hang up and call them back. If the fax monitor does not open and does not respond to the activity I am unable to disconnect it. nothing appears in the task bar either though it should. The Fax itself works I can both send and receive successfully however when receiving it does not hang up once the transmittal has completed it simply continues to clock over the duration of the connection in the top section and nothing at all appearing in the lower section. I only know what is going on by checking the actual fax console. I have removed then reconfigure the fax the modem the lot....What more can I do I seriously need this thing working? . . . . |
