Default Cannot Print

At friends home.

Epson Workforce 840 printer

Set up Win 7 PC (and Win XP) with latest Epson download.

Epson SW says it sees the printer and diagnostics say OK.

It is set as the Default printer.

When I try to print anything, even using their Print Test Page, all I
get is the printer popup coming up showing the printer printing but I
get no printout. Going to the printer queue I see the message:
error - printing

I tried the windows diagnostics and got nowhere.

I see the IP address on the printer as 192.168.1.7

I have tried hardwired (through a switch) and wireless WIFI.

On the Win 7 PC if I go to any browser with that IP address I get a
page not found.

On the Win XP PC if I go to any browser with that IP I can see the
printer info including the ink levels. But cannot print just like on
the WIn 7 PC.

If I go to the printer's control panel I can print all the test pages.

Suggestions please!

I agree, however, EPSON cheeped out and did not provide a USB A-B
cable.
I have no respect for a company that expects you to buy more to make
their product workable. That cable would have cost them less than $1
to provide it.

Go to the pinters web-interface and look around. Maybe you find
something there.

There is a printers newsgroup. I don't know if it still has readers,

I have a Workforce 645, I think it is. It was easy to setup and
worked from the start**. My computer was in the basement and the
printer on the second floor so wireless was essential.

**except wiring for the fax has to be done the way they say (of
course) if you want it to receive faxes. I have to move my phone
wires around every time I need to send a fax (which is once a year).

I can't help here. I didnt' have problems so I didn't have to solve
this problem.

I guess I have one suggestion, start from the beginning and read the
manual. And make sure it's not being interfered with by DEP, Data
Execution Prevention, my latest bugaboo.

I tried the windows diagnostics and got nowhere.

I see the IP address on the printer as 192.168.1.7

You are making assumptions like my x-wife but I am sure she is uglier
than you. At least you have that going for you.

Don't you have one that you can "borrow" from another device, just to
see whether it works.

Then, if it does, you can order one on-line. I imagine that Ebay
delivers to the wilderness?

I've got dozens of the things in my odds-and-sods drawer, but I may be
unusual.

Networking is likely not setup properly on win7. Your printing problem
often relates to that. The printer should show up as three separate
devices in networking, multifunction, printer, scanner. If you are using
a router, the router may also need a look. The multifunction should also
show up as a WSD device.

As to the no USB cable bit, many of the Mfrs started this a long time ago.
