windows xp setup problems
i had to install a new copy of xp onto my hard drive under a new folder name so i could access my original xp copy in order to delete a bad driver that kept me from logging on to windows it would always go to a blue screen and restart over after i fixed the problem i accidently started to install a new copy of xp over the original copy so i stopped it as soon as i noticed what i had done but now when i try to log onto the original copy of windows it starts to load then says setup is restarting is there a file i can edit or delete to cancel out this new installation

Nope. I suggest a clean installation.

well it depends on where you stopped
the process. if you stopped it after entering the product key, then you need to complete the install. however if you stopped before the product key, then the process you interrupted was in a state of copying the files from the cd onto the hd and didn't install them. so I would return to the setup as the computer requests and when you get to entering the product key, and if I recall you can select cancel and and the installation will be aborted. ------------------- however, there is a caveat. because the attempted install may have re written the boot files I would then suggest to boot with that cd, select repair and launch the recovery console. then at the disk prompt run: fixboot fixmbr then exit, remove cd and see if your proceed with the normal booting. incidentally, the fixmbr warning is a bit extreme, just enter yes to proceed. --------------------- if the above doesn't work than proceed with your repair install but carefully read the screens to repair the o.s. instead of repeating a clean install. --------------------- the caveat for the above is that your cd version must match the version on your hard disk. a sp2 cd cannot repair an sp3 o.s. -- db·´¯`·...¸)))º DatabaseBen, Retired Professional - Systems Analyst - Database Developer - Accountancy - Veteran of the Armed Forces - @Hotmail.com - nntp Postologist ~ "share the nirvana" - dbZen ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "techk57" wrote in message ... i had to install a new copy of xp onto my hard drive under a new folder name so i could access my original xp copy in order to delete a bad driver that kept me from logging on to windows it would always go to a blue screen and restart over after i fixed the problem i accidently started to install a new copy of xp over the original copy so i stopped it as soon as i noticed what i had done but now when i try to log onto the original copy of windows it starts to load then says setup is restarting is there a file i can edit or delete to cancel out this new installation -- techk57 |
