Default Shows Install on Shut Down Button, but set to Let Me Decide

Hi,

Win10 HP, x64

Three weeks ago, I installed KB3172605, which solved the long dowmload
times for updates. At that time, I set automatic updates to auto download,
and let me decide when to install,.

(The only updates that show installed without my interventions are near
daily Definition Updates for Microsoft Security Essentials.)

Today, I wanted to shut down my machine, and reboot, and when I hovered
over the Shut Down button, it showed "Installs updates and then shuts down
your computer". But, as I said, I set automatic updates to auto download,
and let me decide when to install.

There are 7 important and 29 optional. I want none.

So, what's up? I guess I could hide all the updates. Anyway to delete
them? I'm going back to check but let me decide if I want to download.

Thanks.

If you want to shut down without installing, click on your Desktop, then
hit Alt-F4. That will give a pop-up box on how to shut down. Just change
it from 'Install updates and shut down' to just 'Shut down'.

I was going through old posts, and when I came across this one (yes, six
months ago), it dawned on me that the Alt-F4 did work just fine, but now
when I do Shut Down from the Start orb, there is no longer a "Installs
updates and shuts down your computer" option, which is also just fine
with me. Does the Alt-F4 method also remove the ""Installs updates and
shuts down your computer" from the Start orb. It's also not available
with Alt-F4. Don't get me wrong, this is fine, just curious.

Do you inn fact have updates waiting to be installed? That option
won't appear if you don't.

Maybe a look at Windows Update History, will shine some light on that.
As it's all too easy for updates to break (jammed plumbing).

Yes. There are 3 Important:

MS16-155: Description of the Security and Quality Rollup .NET Framework
3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1, and 4.6.2 updates for Windows 7 and Windows
Server 2008 R2: December 13, 2016
Says published 3/16/17

March 2017 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows
Server 2008 R2 SP1
Says published 3/14/17

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool helps remove
specific, prevalent malicious software from computers that are running
supported versions of Windows
Says published 3/14/17

There are 25 Optional:

Logitech USB input dsevices, 10/18/16
nVidia graphics adapter WDDM1.1, WDDM!.2, Other hardware, GeForce 310,
8/28/13

March 2017 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and
Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, 3/21/17

two Microsoft.NET Framework updates, from Jan 2015 and Feb 2016

and 20 Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems, dated from 9/10/13 to
3/14/17; vast majority are scattered throughout 2016

Oops, Perhaps it's because I am set to Check for Updates, But Let Me
Choose to Download. I have never let download. Is it because none of
those updates is waiting to be installed? If so, sorry for the wild
goose chase.

Windows Update History shows that Definition Update for Microsoft
Security Essentials has been installing (without my intervention) on an
almost daily basis. The KB numbers are always incrementing upwards.
The current KB number matches the KB number in the Update tab of MSE.

The most recent Optional or Important, non-MSE Definition, Update was
installed 10/22/16. I don't remember when I changed from complete auto
download and install, to download and let me install, to don't download
but let me know what's out there. Thus, I can't draw any one conclusion
that will answer my question posed yesterday. (It was asked out of
curiosity, not because I am having problems.)

I know some let the updates fly in fully auto mode (Win7), and others
have turned them off completely. I like to see what's out there,
though. On my Win10 machines, that's a completely different story. It
tough fighting the inevitable. That's why I rarely use my Win10
laptops, unless away from my home Win7 desktop.

Thanks.

And I think we have a winner! :-)
