older programs not working with newer operating sys..

I want to install AutoCAD 2000 on my computer that runs on Windows XP.
Apparently the operating system "XP" is to new for the software I want to
install. It really don't make sence to me that the newer XP software cannot
run programs that are made to run with older operating systems up to Windows
98..

Any way to fix this?

Verify to us, can you even install the program? If so, you can run it in
"Compatibility Mode".

Wrong OS. AutoCAD supports Windows NT4.0,Windows NT 5.0, Windows 95 and
Windows 98

This message pops up after setup wizard starts up and before actual program
loading begins.

Using Microsoft's free Virtual PC 2004, you could install (say) a
virtual version of Windows 98 on your PC, and install AutoCAD on the
virtual O/S.

One reason being that win9* is written/coded in a completely different way
to winxp, and as such the older app may not be able to understand the later
o/s (thats in broad terms)

This is not XP's or Microsoft's fault. It is AutoCAD's fault for
coding the AutoCAD 2000 too tightly around the requirement for versions
below Windows 2000.

If you can not get it to work with the Compatibility modes or under any
Virtual PC style utilty, you may have to consider get a updated version
of AutoCAD that will work in XP.

This isn't really a matter of WinXP's being able or unable to run older
applications. In most cases, WinXP would have absolutely no problem
running any application designed for Win2K. In this case, your problem
stems from the fact that AutoCAD 2K's developers specifically designed
the application's installation routine to test for certain operating
systems only, and to halt if one of those operating systems weren't
found. Because WinXP isn't on that list, the installation fails. I've
no doubt that if you were able to overcome that hurdle, and complete the
installation, the software would work fine.

You need to contact the makers of AutoCad 2K to see if they've provided
a patch to rectify this deliberate (on their part) omission, or if they
just want to sell you the next version of AutoCAD.

You might try running the AutoCAD 2K CD's Setup.exe in one of WinXP's
compatibility modes, but it'd be a long shot, at best. I doubt that the
compatbility modes will be able to "fool" the hard-coded installation
requirement.

problems. Aclt.exe file version: 21.0.5.120.

I do not have anything set up on the Compatibility tab.

Microsoft's Virtual Machine software may be your salvation. It will
run genuine W/98 in a window on your XP system. Performace can ve
very good since today's hardware is abouy 100x the speed of your
machine when W/98 was current. If you try it and wind up using it,
You might want to add as much memory as you wish you could afford when
you bought yor W/09 machine. That's what? 256MB? Big deal.

I think MS lets you use it for free.

The only limitiation is that if you have some special old hardware,
the drivers may not work in VM.

Try running the Program Compatibility Wizard (Start - All Programs -
Accessories - Program Compatibility Wizard) and use it to launch the
Setup/Install program on the Autocad 2000 CD. Select compatibility
mode for Windows 98 or Windows NT4.

I have installed Autocad R14 and Autocad 2000 (r2i land desktop) with no
problems and both run perfectly. I am curious if these programs run using
Vista!?

perhaps you could look into running a version of "virtual pc", I am checking
into this option myself for running "AutoCad 2i" on a Vista machine and
making "Windows XP" a guest operating system.
