Default Sound & Webcam

I have a webcam with a built in microphone. When using
messenger to have an audio conversation I can hear my
friend perfectly, but when I speak there is a terrible
delay and break up. Can anyone suggest how I can speed
my pc up if that is the problem. I am using:XP home, 120
gb hard drive, 512 mb ram and broadband.

Get rid of the built in microphone and get a normal mic and make sure it is
connected to the sound card and it is the one selected when running the
Wizard.
