No, android is a desktop. android apps are written to android apis, not linux apis. linux on the desktop currently has a very low single digit percentage market share. that is not 'taking over the world'. We don't need the desktop if we have all the rest :-P billions of people disagree with that. But not actual data. :-P -- Cheers, Carlos. |

I guess NASA, CERN, Fermilab, SpaceX, Microsoft (Azure), US Navy submarines, Amazon, Facebook, Twitter, New York Stock Exchange, US Postal Service, Schools, colleges and Universities in Russia, Germany, Philippines, Georgia, Switzerland, Italy, India are all dysfunctional then. most people at those companies and schools use mac, windows, ios and android, not linux, although they might use linux indirectly, such as on a server. Wrong. Just *some* examples below:- CERN uses CentOS 8 - https://cern.service-now.com/service...=linux-desktop "Both CERN and Fermilab use Scientific Linux in *all* their work; this includes running the Large Hadron Collider, the Dark Energy Camera or the 20,000 internal servers of CERN & desktops." - Wolfgang Gruener 2010 - nasa used a lot of macs for the curiousity mars landing: http://i.imgur.com/iua4C.jpg https://photos2.insidercdn.com/mars1208060-2.jpg NASA uses Debian on *all* ISS onboard computers & laptops. They switched from Windows XP to Debian in 2013/14. The U.S. Army is the single largest installed base for Red Hat Linux. The USN submarine fleet uses Linux computers onboard (although they decline to say which) & Lockheed Martin delivered a High Performance Computing (HPC) solution to the US Navy to run sonar systems in nuclear submarines. - US DoD - US FAA uses RedHat Linux in all it's data centres. 33 German Universities migrated to OpenSUSE Linux which *included* the Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop platform. All Swiss primary and secondary public schools have switched to using Ubuntu for the PCs used by teachers and students. Brazil has 35 million students in over 50,000 schools using 523,400 computer stations all running Linux. 22,000 students in the US state of Indiana have had access to Linux Workstations at their high schools since 2006. Iceland has migrated to open-source software in public institutions. Schools have also migrated from Windows to Ubuntu Linux. The New York Stock Exchange has invested heavily in HP x86-based Linux systems running RedHat and blade servers in its NYSE Hybrid Market trading system. Peugeot, the European car maker has deployed up to 20,000 copies of Novell's Linux desktop, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop, and 2,500 copies of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. DreamWorks Animation adopted the use of Linux since 2001, and uses more than 1,000 Linux desktops and more than 3,000 Linux servers/ And many more examples.... |

The answer has always been: Linux *is* the kernel when it suits the argument to promote Linux in the positive. Linux *is not* the kernel when it will not portray Linux in a positive light. Well done Linux community. Now go and put yourselves to good use writing yet another programmer's editor because we all know Linux needs more programmer's editors. The current 999+ versions are not enough. Neither is 25 different package managers. Or 100+ different desktop GUI environments. Or 25 different sound systems. And so forth. |

Android is just as much a linux distro as redhat, slack, debian, mint, etc are. android is in no way a linux distro like redhat etc. Linux refers to the "kernel" or software that sits between the hardware and applications. It's the kernel's job to decide when a program runs, what it's permitted to do, how it accesses files, and how programs tell the hardware on the device what to do. Android uses Linux as it's kernel. While Android does not typically include all the software and services that are part of a typical desktop Linux environment, the basics are still there. ... Android is a Linux operating system because, at it's base, it uses the standard Linux kernel and basic operating system. Android is not a GNU/Linux distro but its Kernel (its powerhouse) is Linux and since it is the convention that a collection of software put together around the Linux Kernel is referred to as Linux, Android is Linux. note that android is listed separately in the link above, not lumped into linux. |

You are correct, but in common usage, and when in the context of desktop computing, the term "Linux" is also often meant as "desktop Linux". It is much how many people refer to two main types of "PCs" -- being "PCs" and "Macs". Context is key. -- Personal attacks from those who troll show their own insecurity. In fact, during a presentation at the Google IO conference, Google engineer Patrick Brady stated unambiguously that Android is not Linux. why don't you tell google that they're wrong. let us know how that works out. |
