Switch off automatic file sorting?
When I rename files in a Win 10 folder the folder is always immediately
sorted. Is there a no-brainer way or a freeware tool to toggle that on or off please? Research found a couple of registry hacks which would not be quick. Or maybe there's a simple folder option and I haven't found it? Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

Thanks. That's a clever solution and I may well adopt it, but it's not really ideal for my purposes. I typically start with files in filename order and step through, selectively renaming certain ones. So I want to simply see the names change after my F2 edit and decide myself when to resort them. It you are sorting the directory alphabetically by name and you change the name of a file is will directory impact the sort. -- Take care, Jonathan ------------------- LITTLE WORKS STUDIO http://www.LittleWorksStudio.com |

IIRC, XP had the behavior where (re)sorts would wait, so you could do what Terry is describing. However, I also remember renaming files and they would jump to the bottom of the list, so I could be wrong. |

Terry, East Grinstead, UK https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...e-disable.html http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/win...ndows-7-and-8/ Maybe it's auto-arrange of Windows Explorer you want to disable. The above is for Windows 7. Don't know if it still works on Windows 10. I tried it for a while but quit. Was great when using Windows Explorer to make changes. Auto-arrange is especially a nuisance when using a thumbnail view within a folder, double-click on one of them to view, and then WE refreshed the list which meant I was at the top of the list instead of still scrolled down to the one that I had picked. However, I sometimes found other programs might make changes in the folder and I wouldn't see it until I hit F5 to manually refresh the list. Disabling auto-arrange also disables auto-refresh. If you don't mind doing a manual refresh to update the list to catch a newly added file or remove a deleted one then this might work for you. You could use the batch files in the 2nd article or use their commands or those in the 1st article to define shortcuts to toggle the auto-arrange function. |

After 15 years of XP immediately followed by Win 10 I miss quite a few of its features. Being unable to choose when a sort takes place seems a clear backward step to me. Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

This article appears to be saying its approach no longer works in Win 10. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html One lateral idea I received is not too bad: before starting the renaming, change the sort to a field that is almost sure to remain untouched, such as Date Created. After some experiment I found I could get to that quite quickly with the KB sequence Alt, v, z, 3, O (that's letter O). Needless to say, that's amenable to a simple macro. Terry, East Grinstead, UK |

Well, you're problem was while you were *in* File Explorer the files were moving around due to auto-arrange. Well, if you close the folder (focus on another), exit Windows Explorer, or you decide to do a manual refresh then you're still not afflicted with *auto*-arrange WHILE you are in File Explorer. Have you tried the registry edits to see if the behavior change is what you want or not? |

I'm sure you're discovering quite a few of those backward steps as you find your way around Win 10. Personally, I have one laptop running 8.x (configured to look and work like 7) and everything else runs Win 7. To me, Win 10 isn't ready for prime time and may never be. MS didn't have me in mind when they created it. |

Terry, East Grinstead, UK Just as an aside, Microsoft has been messing with File Explorer, even in the latest release. This tutorial no longer works in the latest release of Win10 (opening the folder is enough to trigger auto-arrange again, despite registry settings - that is what the warning at the top of the page says). https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html The behavior of File Explorer was always pretty weird anyway. It would take a brave developer to mess with it. The individual who fixed the refresh bugs (such that F5 is no longer needed on a regular basis), that person was a genius. Paul |

There are obscure options under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ ShellNoRoam\Bags\[number]\Shell\ to control whether sorting happens immediately and whether new files are created within the folder window frame or outside it, creating a horizontal scrollbar. In XP it tends to be somewhat arbitrary because the whole system doesn't work properly in the first place. In Vista/7 they then broke that system. Both systems can be repaired to some extent. XP more so than 7. I don't know about Win10. And I also don't know offhand exactly what the settings are. (I keep meaning to ferret out that info because I have a couple of XP folders that add new files way off to the right side, out of sight.) In short, it will take some searching to find the setting and there's a good chance it's broken in Win10. The theme there seems to be "We know best what you need and we don't like people customizing". |
