(FWIW in my Firefox 26, I have a separate search bar, and my URL bar
does _not_ search [I forget whether it came like that, or whether I saw
a hint somewhere about what to change in about:config or elsewhere to
stop it searching].

I have address bar searches disabled in Firefox (I forgot how). Entering
"grc.cok" (a nonexistent URL I use for testing) gives a browser error
page and DOES NOT change the address bar. This does require finding a
DNS server that doesn't do it (GRC's tool helps here).

I don't know much about MSIE (or Edge) since I've used them very little
since Firefox .8 became available (2004?).

I use the MVP Hosts file so of course the hosts file 'can' kill a browser
search, but I don't see how the HOSTS could be set to be browser specific.

You COULD run the specific browser in a virtual machine, and effectively
have a browser-specific hosts file.

Talk about sledgehammer to crack a nut!
