KB3140743 - Windows 10 Patch
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3140743
Fyi...if you've had network discovery issues and used on of the work arounds floating across the internet (e.g. disabling SMBv2 and/or SMBv3 ) ***now*** would be a good time to enable them *before* 3140743 is installed automatically. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

I'm not using Win10, but I happened across the post at Slashdot and it looks rather ominous. http://tech.slashdot.org/story/16/03...blems#comments Windows 10 is, in my experience, about the worst MS OS experience since .... well, nothing. Mostly because I avoided the previous ones I guess. Oh, I've largely got it beat into submission, but not easily. Spent tens or hours Googling for solutions (color? Sheesh!) I've got so many saved .reg files to sort things out that MS ought to pull its head out of its ass and lay it on the chopping block. And add-ons like Classic Shell help. But, despite doing a clean re-intall Edge still won't run (crashes) on two PCs. Not that I care, I don't use MS browsers, just curious. And, yes, I've run every sfc /scannow and DSIM "solution" known to man. The OS is broken. Simple. Oh, and the W10 update tells me that one W7 PC is compatible with W10. I run the update and it simply fails, reverts to W7 with no messages. The clean install on my main PCs fixed most issues (like never being able to turn off drop shadows on desktop icon text) but some remain. It's buggy, and it makes XP and W7 look like exercises in genius. Which, honestly, over the years, proved to be very robust, stable, and made me happy. I have been a loyal customer of MS for decades. This is pushing me to the breaking point. Gates and Ballmer were hardly the most customer-friendly CEOs but Nadala seems to have broken the paradigm. You may be right but my guess is they are trying to dumb down the product, make it a consumer product. They've been working at that for years. They don't get that it isn't. PCs aren't. I don't care what they think, it's not a toaster, it's not an appliance. Never will be. Witness the number of people who turn to me to bail them out of Windows updates. And I'm nearly out of answers. To abandon the desktop/laptop market would be a big mistake. If you don't believe me go to your nearest big box store and look at the items to make the tablet/phone into a desktop. keyboards, expansion USB connections, etc. Whether people admit it or not there are things that do not run well on a tablet/ phone. As for touch screens they are not precise enough for the more complicated application. A mouse can click on a couple of pixel, the smallest your finger can hit is a couple of dozen. A couple of dozen pixel is satisfactory for hit an icon, but fails miserably if you are trying to work in a spreadsheet or similar application |

I'm not using Win10, but I happened across the post at Slashdot and it looks rather ominous. http://tech.slashdot.org/story/16/03...blems#comments For many, 3140743 resolves the issue of Win10 not seeing the Win7 and 8x devices in File Explorer's Navigation pane under the Network folder negating the need to access the device or it's shares by entering \\Computername\share folder in the Explorer address bar. Since the workaround tweaked and disabled SMBv2 and/or SMBv3 the recommendation was to enable those settings prior to letting W10 install 3140743. Not doing so could create issues after installing 3140743. I have seen reports of 3140743 believing to cause problems though not all reports provide enough evidence to validate. In the same light, there are quite a few reports from the enterprise and consumer community that 3140743 resolves the networking share issue. But as we all know and have for some time for the last 20 yrs...installing any update is a leap of faith. -- ....winston msft mvp windows experience |

After reading it I find myself thinking: "...MS today is where SEARS was 40 years ago.." Like the SEARS of 40 years ago, they don't have a clue that anything is wrong. -- Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one. I've been with MS since 1986 (Leading Edge XT) and after taking a good look at Win10 I found myself thinking that maybe it was time for a switch to Apple for a new desktop I wanted to buy. Fortunately I found a desktop with Win7pro so I didn't have to resort to Apple. However it was a serious option (my wife and daughter have Apple so I'm slightly familiar with them) for a while. -- Web based forums are like subscribing to 10 different newspapers and having to visit 10 different news stands to pickup each one.
