Default C:\Drivers

It seems that there is always a C:\Drivers directory, and it usually contains files relating to
hardware not on the system. Is this directory necessary?

I would guess that perhaps you're using an OEM version of Windows, and that
directory came from the OEM. I'm using off-the-shelf (non-OEM) Windows 7
Ultimate, and I do *not* have a \Drivers directory.

The safe route is to leave it alone, but if it really bothers you, burn it to
CD/DVD before you delete it.

Hi Cory,

Not only leave it alone, but make a backup up of it. You
will need these drivers if you ever have to wipe and reinstall.
Put your backup of this directory in storage next to your ISO of
your OS.

If you want to get rid of anything, get rid of Bing.

I've just done a search with Everything (of my W7 machine), and I've
only got 34 files/folders with bing in the name, ranging from 1 to 7 KB
in size - most of them icons. While I don't particularly want them
there, I can't see they're causing much of a problem - there certainly
isn't a root folder.

On my two Thinkpads (T41 and E560), it's the location Lenovo
System Update uses to expand and keep their installation
packages. Seems harmless.

It is just the crappiest search engine I have come across.
I have to use Google or Duck Duck Go to find things on M$'s
Tech Net. And as you have noticed, it spreads itself across
your system. I just go into Programs and Features and remove
the thing. I consider Bing to be spyware.

Speaking of random topics, how's your Cobian problem going ?

The machine that becomes "jittery" after about four days,
with a backup running once a day on it. The guy with the
30GB worth of Outlook or something.

There's no guarantee that all of the drivers the system uses are in that
folder. Personally I would use a program to back up all of the drivers
and store them on disc/USB, and delete that folder.

Now that I got him automatically shutting down every night,
the problem has not reoccurred.

I thought something has gone wacko with VSS.

No, but there is a real high probability of that. I personally
have never seen them not to be and I have worked on
several hundreds Windows machines.

Personally I would use a program to back up all of the drivers

I would not delete them for two reasons:

1) they are awfully handy to have around if you need to reinstall
a driver

2) having duplicated avoids disasters. "If you don't bring
your car's jack, you WILL get a flat tire."

Very likely a temporary folder created by some installation programs...
maybe Intel? If it does not take too much space, just leave it there.
