Default windows update service

For a few days, whenever I try Windows Update, it says;

"Window Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service
is not running. You may need to restart your computer"

I have re-started my computer multiple times, but still it does not
perform the update.

When I start the "services" app on Administrative Tools, it says
Windows Update is running.

The Sony support droid suggested restoring the entire C drive to deal
with this error.

Advice?

The old solutuions don't work for this problem. MS forgot to
update the WU expiration date in the November WU package.

First, have a look at this article, courtesy BleepingComputer:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/new...ow-to-fix-it-/
and this from MS Answers:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...58c229e?auth=1
[mind the wrap]

1. Download the corrected authorization file (v6-muauth.cab, link
in the 12/5/2017 update to the BleepingComputer article). Save
this for a rainy day.
2. Copy the above file from its current location to
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\AuthCabs\authcab.c ab,
overwriting the original. This will require elevated
(administrator) access.
3. From the Windows Update control panel, change the Windows
Update 'Important Updates' setting (Control Panel | Windows
Update | Change settings | Important Updates) from its current
setting to 'Never check'. Save that setting, then change that
setting back to your preferred setting (in my case, 'Check but
let me choose when'). This resets the service to pick up the
updated authcab.cab expiration date.

Hope this helps.
George
