Phonerlite - Question Time Please :-)

Hello Experts,

I am interested in using PhonerLite (a German program, and the source is
www.PhonerLite.de) with my computer and I seem to have the basic
PhonerLite program.

I need to find the following :
1 A Proxy/Registrar
2 A STUN Server (keep your heads down guys)
3 Domain/Realm.

As I understand it, there are numerous groups involved in this field.
Does any one have knowledge of the cost of setting up a good Internet
phone system. I know about Skype but they seem to have a low quality
phone system, at least in some parts of the planet.

Skype is a proprietary system, I would avoid it.

From your description, I presume PhonerLite is an open standards based
SIP/RTP system ... there are plenty of VoIP providers (e.g. sipgate,
gradwell, a&a, vonage, voipcheap) it ought to work with, some have a
monthly charge of couple of quid, others don't have a monthly charge,
all will charge you for calls to normal phones.

I have used phonerlite, phoner and zoiper, all free, all work very

I already have Phonerlite installed. Presumably Phoner is a more mature.
I have done searches for all of the above and list is overwhelming.

I found Sipgate and noticed that it has a lot of 'fixed lines.' Is that
just land lines? The charges for calls within the UK can be 10p/min.
Does Skype do any better? How did you get free calls? I need to know the
secret :-)

What would be the least expensive and least complicated system? I would
like to be able to chat with 2 to 4 people (audio and video) and to send
faxes.

Could an ordinary phone be used in these systems?

Yes, for "normal" 01/02/03 calls sipgate are 1.19p/min, the 10p/minute
is for "premium" lines like 0871

No, Skype are 1.4p/min for "normal" numbers and 13.5p/min for 0871, and
up to 155p/min for some calls.

How did you get free calls? I need to know the
secret :-)

For free calls you generally need to call someone else on *their* VoIP
system, so it travels over the internet all the way, rather than
touching the PSTN at either end, if you call their PSTN number, you'll
be charged.

Could an ordinary phone be used in these systems?

Yes, you need an ATA (analogue telephone adapter)

That web site almost blew me way. It reminded me of the very first time
I walked into New York city. There is a huge number of options there.

Do you know of any reasonably priced ATA that has had a good record for
durability, clarity of speech, and for the faxing ability?

I already have PhonerLite set up, I know about Sipgate now and, apart
from the ATA, is there anything else needed to get it running?

to be linked to the BT HomeHub, but maybe they're opening it up now? I
wouldn't claim to know much about their offerings, maybe someone else
has experience of using it with an ATA or softphone?
