can't open regedit
I have tried to update the driver via the device manager but it simply tells
me that I already have the best software installed. Should I delete the driver? Is there a place I can download a clean copy? Thanks again. "Dixonian69" wrote: Why aren't you trying to remove drivers using update or rollback feature in Device Manager? If your Cd drive isn't recognized or has a bad driver, it probaly won't read any cd let alone your XP CD. |

can't open regedit
HiBaller,
I just entered that in my comand prompt and it tells me that & was unexpected. Not sure what that means... Thanks again. "HiBaller" wrote: Have you tried entering "regedt32" in a command prompt? It is the same as 'regedit', but can handle some extra variables and functions exactly the same as "regedit". "cabezon" wrote: Hello, thanks for the help. I'm trying to use regedit so that I can fix my corrupted driver for my cd drive. But when I try to run Regedit, I get told that Windows can't find it. I've followed the suggestions from the other posts with no luck. When I run sfc / scannow I get the request for the XP cd. Either I don't have the right XP cd or my corrupted cd drive is preventing Windows from accessing the cd. I read the article regarding the workaround of the XP cd, but that requires using Regedit. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Okay. I understand your point about the command prompt.
Maybe Im the dumb one and trying to read too much into it. To me at least, it would ahve been clearer just to say at commnad prompt type: reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion" /v SourcePath sorry i'm so defense. I guess over ananlyzing makes it more difficult to understand. "Wesley Vogel" wrote: C:\Program Files\Support Tools Is the *prompt* from David's cmd.exe. Thanks Nepatsfan. I didn't find regedit.exe in any of those locations. Nor does it come up when I do a search. Thanks David Candy. I can't say I know what I'm doing when I'm in Command Prompt. I'm pretty ignorant in these matters. The registry editing I plan on doing is from some instructions I got off the Windows Help site. (and yes, I've got everything backed up). Any suggestions? Much appreciated. "Nepatsfan" wrote: cabezon wrote: Hello, thanks for the help. I'm trying to use regedit so that I can fix my corrupted driver for my cd drive. Assuming Windows is installed on your C drive, you should find that file in the following locations: C:\Windows C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache You may also find a copy he C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 If you don't find regedit.exe in C:\Windows, copy it from one of the other locations into C:\Windows. If you find a copy in C:\Windows it would indicate that there's a problem with your PATH environmental variable. If that's the case, go to this web site, download fixpath2.zip, extract the files, read FIXPATH.txt and run FIXPATH.exe. Maybe you have virus or something.
have you tried System Restore? When did cd drive become corrupted? anything change? Maybe you should repost with new question. cd drive driver corrupted or cd read failure. then people can help you with that and every here can still work on "Why can't I use regedit?" New cd driver. got to cd mfg website or google for cd driver. there are also driver download sites. www.cnet.com ( might have downloads) www.drivershq.com , www.driversguide.com, and more like i said make new post for cd drive problem. it is to confusing to mix with this post. Can you see what I'm talking about "getting confusing".
Obviously you did command better than me cause I just get this real long list scorll down in command window. I don't see it give a valuue like you. Although it did say "! REG.EXE VERSION 3.0" at the top of the list. Anyway, I can use regedit and manually went to this 'key'. I have F:\I386. The CD is setting in my cd drive which is "F". What you're suppose to do, I don't know either. Is he suggesting you change your value to match his? I wouldn't. There was a problem with cmd.com vs cmd.exe I think it was related to malware or virus. Maybe there is same issue with regedit.exe..... Since you already looked for this and didn't find, Search for regedit.com...... Let me know. Another isssue is cd driver corruption!! do a search for the regsvr32.exe file using the search menu, check the
advanced tab and check boxes for hidden files and subfolders. uncheck the case sensitive box. then hit search. If you find a regsvr32.exe file open it. It should ask you where to extract it. I put mine in c:/windows/system32. see if that helps. "Dixonian69" wrote: Maybe you have virus or something. have you tried System Restore? When did cd drive become corrupted? anything change?
