question about XP upgrade/hardware change
We have an older HP 6465 Celeron 433 with upgraded RAM to 2-
128 MB PC133. Also have added a 20 GB hard drive as master and have the original 8 GB drive as slave. The motherboard is a ASUS MEB-VM (with some HP variations, I think). It has physical jumpers to set FSB and CPU multipliers. The board is supposed to support up to 512 MB according to the motherboard manual. HP says that it is limited to the amount I have currently install, 256 MB. I presume this is due to a different BIOS used by HP rather than the BIOS listed by ASUS. My question is; I would like to upgrade to XP from W98se and then, if that works OK, change the FSB to 100 MHz from 66 and set the CPU multiplier to 4.5 or even 5.0. Does anybody see any problem with this? |

I assume you are a PC hobbyist; I can't imagine anybody commercially investing all that time to run XP on an old, kinda slow, PC. That MB should work with the FSB at 100 MHz, since you have PC133 DIMMs, but I suggest that you try FSB=100 with a low CPU multiplier first; if that works, then try cranking the CPU multiplier. Caveat: I don't know what HP did to this MB: maybe nothing, maybe HP cobbled up the BIOS to inhibit fiddling the FSB and multiplier, or maybe HP uses Asus rejects from the Iraq Republican Guard. -- Cheers, Bob |

Can't afford to buy a newer computer right now. The old
Celeron is fine for my wife, who does office type work. No games. XP has some better features, I would buy a MS OEM CS (and a new CPU fan, you can always use a new CPU fan) for the install. I could completely trash the HP software package then. The motherboard manual does support FSB at 100 Mhz and the original RAM was PC100 (1-64 MB and 1- 32 MB). I used PC133 because it was less expensive for the upgrade a year and a half ago. I seem to remember that Intel had insisted that Celeron CPU run at 66 Mhz because they were a little faster than PII's if both were on 100 Mhz FSB. But if the CPU multiplier is set to 4.5 I'd only be "over-clocking" about 4%. But the jump from 66 to 100 FSB should provide a 50% boost in speed.??? I have email (Cc the post) to ASUS tech support. I've already decided that the mobo is not a good candidate
for upgrade to XP. Also there isn't much room to gain anything with a CPU upgrade from 433 to 533, the fastest Celeron chip that will work. A PII socket 370 PPGA chip seems to be either unavailable or high priced. I'll live with it as it is, and save some money for a new system that will run XP well. The big cost is the new OS and applications. case $100 w/ ps mobo $100-125 CPU $50-80 onboard video, audio, and LAN, USB 2.0 V.92 modem $20-30 CD-RW $50 Hard Drive $80-100 (60-80 MB) OEM MS XP Pro $125 Office XP Pro as much as all the above. Student version available, but EULA limits uses. Thanks to all who replied. I just hoped I could get a good boost to performance by over-clocking. I'd heard that the only reason not to run a Celeron above 66 MHz FSB was Intel marketing restrictions (comments welcome on that). Since the old mobo (ASUS MEB-VM) uses jumpers and not the BIOS to set FSB and CPU multiplier, I'd hoped it would be as simple as moving a couple of jumpers to 100 FSB and PCI to 33 (were it is now).
