Default Slooooow Computer!

Thank you,

I haven't downoaded the update and have run loads of
defrags. I have norton Antivirus and have used the speed
disk, disk doctor and win doctor to diagnose problems but
still computer no faster. have also tried to disable the
auto-protect but that makes no difference either.

If you have installed Hotfix Q811493 from the Windows
Update site at about the time the slow down started
occurring then uninstall it.

If that's not the case, run a defrag.

Hi

Can anybody advise why my computer may be running so
slow. It started happening a few months ago and is
getting gradually worse. Where before microsft word

would
take 1-2 seconds to load, it now takes up to 10. Games
are also quite jerky even though they have the latest
graphics drivers supporting them.

I have well over 1/2 the hard disk free too.

My computer specs.
P4 2.0ghz
40 gb hard disk
256mb ram

If anyone can help i would be very grateful indeed!.

Thanks

Charlotte

You may have not downloaded, doesn't mean your not inadvertently auto
updating your system? If you leave your computer on 24/7 and it's
(auto-update) on, it will download and install. Best bet is to double check
in add/remove programs for Hotfix Q811493 as your symptoms along with
Norton are exactly the problems encountered with this patch. This patch
isn't a new update, now rather old. It's been out a while now and continues
to cause problems with those who have it installed and are running
anti-virus software in background. Result, global slow down launching all
apps.

Definitely double check in add/remove programs. If it's not there, I'm not
sure what to tell you, could be almost anything... Could try running
adaware, perhaps remove Norton, test speed (Norton not set up perfectly is
like a person treading water, won't float long). Reinstall and test again.

Have you updated any drivers, video, particularly. Not knowing all the
services or apps you run on your system, could be memory.. 256 is bare
bones for XP. Could be you have less space than you think due to services
like system restore if left un-managed, page file size etc. Could go on and
on with possibilities.

Worst case scenario "IF" you do have restore points, restore back 2 months
check performance?

Good Luck!

GD

Thank you for you advice, it's nice to be treated like
someone who may know something rather than just another
female computer user. (Alvin!!)

It seems i have either tried your suggestions or you have
confirmed what i had thought anyway, but it was nice to
know i haven't been wasting my time.

Thanks again for your human advice
