Windows 8 is a Flop, just as I predicted
http://www.computerworld.com/s/artic...rget_Windows_8
Even Vista did better. Of course, this is in line with MS' good/bad, good/bad Windows roll out. Win 98 good Win Me bad XP good Vista bad 7 good 8 bad 9? If it becomes a rental in the cloud, so much for Windows; that's the end. -- Alias |

Win 98 good Win Me bad XP good Vista bad 7 good 8 bad 9? If it becomes a rental in the cloud, so much for Windows; that's the end. That'd open the flood-gates. Just imagine if you took Windows out of the market. What would happen? My answer; You'd get lots and lots of people taking up the Win skeleton and tailoring it. The market would become overflowing with competing versions of it; a bit like we have with gas and electricity suppliers, who scramble their tariffs in order to befuddle the punters, tell outright lies and rule; until eventually the gov would have to step in and bring them to order. At least MS were right about tablets. They're the future, no doubt about it. But desktops are still the norm for older people and especially office work; and those number millions. If MS can split Win into two; one for PCs, one for tablets, then they'll get back on track. Ed |

While I have used tablets since around 2000, I knew virtually nothing about Windows tablets. So I decided that I had to start learning. My first one back in 2012 was a Windows 7 tablet. There wasn't many Windows 8 tablets yet, so I bought two of them. One I installed Windows 8. Both were a great crash course to Windows 7 and 8 tablets. But I needed more knowledge about Windows tablets. So I purchased Windows 3.1 and Windows XP tablets too. So I could see where it got started and see where it is going. And I can tell you there is no difference between a Windows tablet and a Windows desktop. Applications are the same, the Windows kernel is the same, keyboards are the same, mice, external monitors, etc. are all of the same. If MS can split Win into two; one for PCs, one for tablets, then they'll get back on track. If a Windows desktop and a Windows tablet is the same, why divide them up? That is what Apple has done and the two are not compatible with each other. As the OS is different, applications are different, etc. I see no reason whatsoever to divide them up. Look at Linux, it is divided up into over 300 distros. That doesn't help Linux whatsoever. No developer wants to support 300+ distros, let alone two different Windows versions. -- Bill Gateway M465e ('06 era) - Kingston 120GB SSD - Thunderbird v24.4.0 Centrino Core2 Duo T7400 2.16 GHz - 4GB - Windows 8.1 Pro w/Media Center |

Some run Windows RT which is not the same as a "regular" version of Windows. |

Ironically Windows 8.1u1 does a very very good job of this, but it gets lumped into the people that tried Windows 8, weren't smart enough to figure it out and throw tantrums. Luckily for Microsoft, this means they've fleshed out the issues and Windows 9 will likely be a hit since it reboots people's expectations, and people who haven't tried 8 since 8.0 RTM will compare their memory with Windows 9, find it's usable and be happy. That being said, Windows 8 did sacrifice a lot of what people expected out of the desktop for the sake of trying to force people to try the Modern UI, without having a complete experience on the Modern UI, and it just didn't work unless you were on a touch screen. But as I said, 8.1u1 has smoothed over these rough edges and is very usable even on a keyboard+mouse driven desktop environment. -- If you cannot convince them, confuse them. |

The main complaint seems to be the lack of "Start Menu"; it's there, it just needs to be "enabled (created)". |

There is a start menu, it's just using big squares instead of a list with icons. It's a lot more flexible in Windows 8.1u1 too. At least that's how I look at it, prior to my Surface I used the Modern UI as just a launcher, and it worked just fine for that on a multiple-massive-monitor desktop setup. -- HAM AND EGGS: A day's work for a chicken; A lifetime commitment for a pig |

Also, hardware manufacturers should create Linux drivers and put them in disks with the hardware and available online on their website. There should also be a database of all hardware and their Linux drivers which people can search for and download. |
