Default "Parameter is incorrect" on floppy drive

Just purchased a new Dell PC. Haven't connected to
internet yet as taking it to uni with me on Sat so have
done no updates for Windows XP although I have installed
Service Pack 2. When accessing the floppy drive through my
computer I am receiving a "parameter is incorrect"
message. I am unable to open my floppies. Obviously the
floppy drive hardware is new and has been tested as being
functional. I can boot the computer from a floppy. The
BIOS has been looked at and the settings are correct. I
think this may just be a case of waiting to do a Windows
update when I'm connected to the internet but if anybody
knows any different please help.
