odd disconnection
I just had a very odd disconnection: I could still send and receive
email, and do a ping, but suddenly web pages weren't getting through. I'd been connected about 5 or 6 days, I think. Three browsers - Firefox, Chrome, and IE. No error message or anything - just the connect symbols kept going round for ever. On an adjacent computer, connected to the world via the same router, Firefox worked fine. Restarting this PC restored normal operation. (One slight surprise - my news and email client, Turnpike, popped up a couple of popups saying it wasn't my default mail and news client, did I want it to be. It had been, for many years and through two computer changes!) -- J. P. Gilliver. UMRA: 1960/1985 MB++G()AL-IS-Ch++(p)Ar@T+H+Sh0!:`)DNAf I long for the commercialised Christmas of the 1970s. It's got so religious now, it's lost its true meaning. - Mike [{at}ostic.demon.co.uk], 2003-12-24 |

If you by chance use a DNS server like UKFast or any associated with DynDNS, it appears they had a bit of an intermittent problem today for about 30 min. I could access clients network using IP address but not when I used the "friendly name" used by the DNS host. I was busy doing other things so I didn't dig any further since everything came back shortly after -- Bob S. |

My continuing to be able to send and receive emails and news posts could have been because my client, or possibly some other part of the computer, or the router, had cached the numeric address of the news and mail servers. The ping is slightly odd, but I used www.bbc.co.uk, which was in the ping buffer of my client, so that might have been cached somewhere too. Although at least some of the pages I wasn't getting through to with the browsers were ones I'd accessed not long before - and the other PC's browser continued to work. (Not sure if I tried going to any _new_ pages with it, though.) And it seems rather a coincidence that I just decided to restart the computer at the time things got better, if I did! Ah well - all is back working now (and has been since the restart). Just putting it down to experience. -- J. P. Gilliver. Short further pause and then normal take off. Once wheels up and climbing, he announced that *switching off and back on* had fixed the problem! -- Tim Lamb |
