Faxxing png converted to pdf
I use Linux, but would like to know if the same problem occurs in Windows.
I scan documents and create .png files which I then convert to pdf as my fax program will only work with them. When I send those pdfs to faxtoy.net(a free fax site), they are garbled. Other files like text or other document formats are not garbled when faxxed. Does the same thing occur in Windows? Thanks, Andy |

Thanks, Andy FAX has ECM, so it's unlikely to be an analog transmission problem. If there are transmission errors, the sending end will try up to four times to get the info through. http://www.garretwilson.com/essays/c...group3fax.html If your sending fax program has an "onscreen display", you'd want to monitor that to see if it is parsing the PDF properly. Seems an odd fax program that will only take .pdf, but OK. Do the .png and .pdf files look OK when viewed locally before you send them? If you pass the .pdf through http://www.extractpdf.com/, do the scans come back OK? Are they two-level (black and white), greyscale, or colour images? When I send those pdfs to faxtoy.net(a free fax site), they are garbled. Other files like text or other document formats are not garbled when faxxed. I thought you said your fax program would only take .pdf files? Or do you mean you are using .pdf files of text or other documents, but produced by something different to whatever you are using to do the .png to .pdf conversion? Does the same thing occur in Windows? Thanks, Andy We need to pin down what "thing" is malfunctioning. It could be o the .png to .pdf conversion software (even if the .pdfs _look_ OK) o the fax software o something at faxtoy.net -- J. P. Gilliver. So when you say "Other files like text or other document formats are not garbled when faxxed", _are_ you faxing text files, or .pdf files made from those text files (but using something different to what converted your .png scans into .pdf)? If you are actually faxing the text files, then presumably you're using a different faxing utility. -- J. P. Gilliver. It's just possible when you say "garbled", it's just feathering on the edge of fonts which is screwed up by the color conversion step that could be happening. If you can show us a picture with the "before" and "after", it makes it easier for us to figure out what "garbled" means. Paul |
