Application Layer Attack
-----Original Message----- I am using XP Professional, did a full upgrade from Win95. In hindsight should have go to XP Home since I am only one who uses PC and only to access internet; I do not access any corporate networks. After installing I was on internet for awhile before re- downloading McAfee Virus and Personal Firewall and I believe, based on the problems I have had and my research that I have an application layer attack, which alters files, executables, etc and I can not get rid of it. Information says how not to get, not what to do if you have it. I have applied all XP updates and security patches, I keep McAfee up to date, I ran the Blaster, etal programs but still have problem I have completely reformatted hard disk to raw and then reformatted, reinstalled everything (have done several times) still have problem.Have used policies to restrict everything, still have problem. Here are some of the ways it shows up. When I run SFC/File protection, I get the message that I need to reinstall some Microsoft programs which have been changed. When I insert the CD, I get the message that it is the wrong one; it is the one I have used to install XP, and is the only one I have. I have a ton of programs in C:\Windows\PC Health which just seem to grow. When I run Help for example, McAfee tells me I have a suspious binary file. There is also a folder named Data Collection which grows each time I use my PC. The list goes on. Has anyone every seen this problem, know how to get rid of it or point me to a source who can help? I sent an email to Microsoft support a few days ago (because the phone wait was 1 hour, and I did not want to open my system to remote help for the obvious reasons) but I have not heard back. Also emailed McAfee Techncial support, no response yet. Any help, advice or suggestion on resource to help much appreciated. . |
