Default Explorer folder view _ stuck on _ (!)

I've never seen this one befo

I want "common tasks" rather than "folder view" on the left side of the
explorer window. Simple, right? I've done this for years with no problem.
Well, I have a new PC at work (XP Pro SP1) and regardless of what I have
tried to do with folder options and whatnot, I cannot save my preference of
no folder view. Windows ALWAYS reverts to showing folder view. ACK!

If I uncheck "folder view" I do get the common tasks panel (even though I
cannot save this preference). And even stranger still, if I open a
subfolder while the common tasks is being shown, windows opens a NEW explorer
window (equipped with folder view of course).

Why is windows dissing the common tasks pane?

Any ideas??!!

Well I figured it out... and boy does this seem strange.

If anyone encounters this in the future here is what to do. Go to the
folder options, and click on your "file types" tab. Scroll to locate folder
and select it. Click on the "advanced" button. Select "open" and click on
"set default". Click on OK to make the dialogs go away. Thats it.

Weird.
