Would like to try WSL 2, but ...
So to run WSL 2, I have to join the early insider program (again, I was
part of it before). So I tried to do that -- after signing off on the disclaimer, clicked on the button in settings to join the program. It comes up with an error something like "something went wrong, error 0x0". In doing research on this, it appears this error can pop up if full diagnostics aren't turned on. Alas, when I went to turn it on, it was grayed out...and there is red text saying that some of the settings are managed by "my organization". Since I log in to my work account from this system on occasion, it's possible that our IT guys have pushed some kind of policy that full diagnostics can't be enabled. So, my question: Is there a crafty way to override any such setting, so I can turn on full diagnostics? BTW, I did try logging in with a personal account, but got the same "error 0x0". And I also tried running what is listed at the following URL, but that didn't help either: https://www.kapilarya.com/reset-loca...-in-windows-10 Any suggestions greatly appreciated. -- -v |

Why aren't you running your WSL2 test in a VM ? I wouldn't run an Insider program setup, and make connections to work with it. Bad hygiene. I keep my Insider setup separate from everything else here. Practical *nothing*, no useful work, is done in the Insider setup. It just keeps doing Upgrade installs, and is kept as a reference. You can always edit the Registry and change that setting, but I don't think I'd do that to a dual-purpose setup like you propose. You'll be put on a different software stream (like the Fast ring), and be receiving OS Upgrades all the time. There have been "rough patches" where the delivered OSes are broken in some way. I actually tried to Upgrade Install one of my Insiders manually, after it complained about some licensing issue (I did this a couple days ago). While installing this failed to complete, the application of the install attempt actually repaired whatever was wrong. (It could have been a server problem, we'll never know.) The discs are "one behind" the current release, which might be 18936 or so. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...reviewadvanced Windows10_InsiderPreview_Client_x64_en-us_18932.iso And that's a pretty big ISO if I recollect. It's probably an 11-OS version and would need dual-layer DVD media. To install in a VM, you can keep it as an ISO and just tell the VM to use the ISO as a virtual DVD drive. The Insider program uses your Microsoft Account (MSA), if you already have one. You'll need something like that to get the media. Paul |

I honestly thought the "spirit" of the insider program was to use the build for everyday computing. But now that I think about it, all I want to do is look at WSL 2 itself, and not necessarily do a comprehensive test. Just wondering what performance is going to look like, because WSL 2 will be essentially nested virtual hosts. And that's a pretty big ISO if I recollect. I'm actually going to fire it up under virtualbox on Linux... Thanks again. -- -v |

Okay, answer number 2: Because a Win10 nested virtual host doesn't seem to run in a virtualbox virtual host? https://imgur.com/0UDSITm I think I'm going to have to, at least, try to do some kind of live install on a USB stick, or dual-boot to it, or something. -- -v |

Woops, don't mind me -- just read that I need to be running Virtualbox 6 to have a HyperV virt run inside it. -- -v |

Why run Linux on Windows on Linux ?

Scott: I need to be running Virtualbox 6 to have a HyperV virt run inside it. Why run Linux on Windows on Linux ? Mainly because all my virtualization experience is with libvirtd (incl. virt-manager), and virtualbox, on Linux. I've never run any HyperV, ever. I want to see how comprehensive WSL 2 is, and it appears to handle setting up its own virtual host mechanics, so I've kind of been relying on that. I guess I could learn about HyperV. Indeed, guess I might have to -- still have the same problem after upgrading to virtualbox-6.0 (on Linux), which if I'm interpreting things correctly, is that Windows 10 isn't detecting "virtualability" within the guest with which to start its own HyperV guest. -- -v |
