Windows 7 screen savers
For years I have used the Windows 7 screen saver, set to blank and 15
minutes. All of a sudden I started to notice that it appeared to not be blanking. I've reset it to 1 minute, just to monitor it. Still no blank. Any ideas what might have changed? |

BTW, I Googled this and it was suggested to reinstall the video drivers, but that didn't help. I'll try your suggestion. |

Still no blank. Any ideas what might have changed? Tried logging off and back on? Tried rebooting? I've encountered where the screen saver won't activate under the current state of the OS and your OS session. Either of the above gets it working again. There are some programs that can be configured or behave by default to disable the screen saver when they run. For example, the VLC player can be configured to disable the screen saver when it is playing some media. Could be when they get used and they disabled the screen saver (not its configuration) that they forgot to reenable screensaver when no longer used or upon exit. Of course, if they crash, they cannot restore the state for anything. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4...-from-starting http://www.blackwasp.co.uk/DisableScreensaver.aspx I would think that once the screensaver-blocking program was unloaded (exited) that it could no longer effect a reset on the idle timeout. Some methods for blocking the screensaver is to alter its config; however, when I visit the screensaver settings, they haven't changed. I can see if the program is still loaded that it could continue to effect a block on idle timeout. It is possible for software to substitute the screensaver for a standard one. They should rename the screensaver in the registry but that is them being polite. I've had to restore the standard .scr file to get back the standard screensaver file. .scr files contain executable code and why you should not obtain them from untrusted sources. Consider an ..scr file the same as an .exe file. They don't define the parameters of a screen saver. They ARE the screen saver /program/. .scr files have been used to distribute malware. When my anti-virus offered a screen saver that ran a malware scan when the screen saver went active, it was based on whatever was the existing screen saver. A new entry was added in the registry giving the screensaver entry a new name to let you know that one worked with the AV program to run a scan. They could've reused the old name and you wouldn't know you were running a different .scr program as your screensaver. |

I have also seen setting the screen saver to something different, like no screen saver. Log off or shut down. Then bring up the system and set it to what you really want and once again log off or shut down. Then after it comes up the final time see if your settings are now taking effect. Kind of like flushing out a stuck bit of code that says it's set one way but hidden from view it's really set for something else. |

Here's what I tried; unplug USB devices, one at a time (mouse, keyboard, printers, scanner, UPS), shut off background slideshow and only use a solid color. But, here's what I noticed. While watching a youtube video, the timeline, which normally disappears after a short timeout, pops back after about 10 second and then disappears. This continuously repeats itself. BTW, if I click on the digital time icon and display the analog clock, the youtube timeline doesn't come back. Really weird! |

I knew it was there, just didn't connected the problem to it. Once closed, the screen saver and monitor off both work perfectly. |

Yes, I (OP) too, saw it, but was thinking something like Flash. BTW, the big problem is that you can't just run the Dish viewer when you want it. It must be installed. Once installed, it auto loads at boot, so, if you don't want your screen saver inhibited, you have to 'quit' out of it. I reported that to Dish and they opened a trouble ticket. I'm not holding my breath for a fix. Most consumer companies just close trouble tickets, even though they didn't fix the problem. Also, Dish used to have a viewer that ran in the browser, but now went to this stand alone program. |
