Default ICS client: No internet access

Hi,

I've got the "usual" configuration:
1 ICS server and 1 ICS client. The server is connected to the ISP via modem.
The LAN works. The server can do everything in the internet without problem.
Everything is configured correctly.

But: the client can not access the internet. The only firewall is the one at
the server for the dial-up connection.

Tracert from the client to a web server:
1 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms pc1.mshome.net [192.168.0.1]
2 * * * timeout

Tracert from the server to the same web server works. The strang thing is:
As soon as I start it, it also works from the client!

Later, I tried to swap the roles of the PCs: I connected the modem to the
client, it became the server and the server became the client. This way
it works!

I tried everything (apart from reinstalling XP) to get it to work, without
success. I've already asked in this group but didn't get an answer. I'd be
glad if anybody could help me. Thanks in advance!

Armin

No, this is not right.
- The ICS server's DNS server is my ISP's DNS server, and the ICS client's
DNS server is the ICS server.
- Tracert using the IP is not a DNS issue.

Do you have DNS in ICS server? so, check the DNS setting, for example, can
you nslookup to check the DNS?

If you go to the service section of the mmc and look at the Inaternet
Connection Firewall /Internet Connection Sharing Service does it show
Started or Starting?
If it only shows starting and never gets to started then the problem
is similar to mine and almost certainly nothing to do with DNS.
I've speculating to myself for a couple of days about this and haven't
yet come up with a good answer as to why it's happening.
The problem is on a computer that I don't have here but I have
wondered whether swapping the roles of the two NIC's might sort it
out.
Good Luck. I'll follow the thread.

Default ICS client: No internet access

Thank you very much for your answer!

The answer to your first question is: Sometimes. It's not reproducable when
it works and when it doesn't. Second question: I just checked some hosts
using nslookup started on the ICS client, and all of them worked.

If I call Windowsupdate from the start menu, IE opens, the status bar
displays "website found. waiting for response..." Then the progressbar is
displayed, but nothing happens. Sometimes I only get a partial website and
after a long timeout, I get a DNS or a timeout error. This happens for all
websites. It doesn't happen when the same sites are called from the ICS
server. Consequently it must be any sort of routing problem between the ICS
server and the client(s). It's the same problem with FTP, so it's not a
HTTP, but a general routing problem. I've no idea what I've done because it
worked for months.

Might be a hint: When I use nslookup on the client, I get:

====
Server: 192.168.0.17
Address: 192.168.0.1

Nicht autorisierte Antwort:
Name: www.microsoft.akadns.net
Addresses: 207.46.249.190, 207.46.249.27, 207.46.134.190, 207.46.134.222
207.46.249.222
Aliases: www.microsoft.com
====

What I do not understand is the IP in the first line: 192.168.0.17. This IP
isn't used in the LAN at all. Only 2 machines are running. Server:
192.168.0.1, client: 192.168.0.229. Pinging 192.168.0.17 results in "not
reachable".

I'd provide as many information as I can if it helps to solve the problem.
:-) (it's not my first time installing ICS, but in this case I'm really
lost).

Do you have DNS in ICS server? so, check the DNS setting, for
example, can you nslookup to check the DNS?

No, this is not right.
- The ICS server's DNS server is my ISP's DNS server, and the
ICS client's DNS server is the ICS server.
- Tracert using the IP is not a DNS issue.

Hi,

I've got the "usual" configuration:
1 ICS server and 1 ICS client. The server is connected
to the ISP via
modem.
The LAN works. The server can do everything in the
internet without
problem.
Everything is configured correctly.

But: the client can not access the internet. The only
firewall is the one
at
the server for the dial-up connection.

Tracert from the client to a web server:
1 8 ms 7 ms 8 ms pc1.mshome.net
[192.168.0.1] 2 * * * timeout

Tracert from the server to the same web server works.
The strang thing is: As soon as I start it, it also
works from the client!

Later, I tried to swap the roles of the PCs: I
connected the modem to the client, it became the
server and the server became the client. This way it
works!

I tried everything (apart from reinstalling XP) to get
it to work, without success. I've already asked in
this group but didn't get an answer. I'd be glad if
anybody could help me. Thanks in advance!

If you go to the service section of the mmc and look at the
Inaternet Connection Firewall /Internet Connection Sharing
Service does it show Started or Starting?

Thanks to you, too!

The state of the service is "started".

After I had to - for other reasons, of course - exchange the mainboards of
both machines, and after the hardware has been detected (including NICs
(although been manually reinstalled multiply times before to find the
error)), everything is working well now. Problem "solved".
