Default Win 8.1 repeats updates

Win 8.1 keeps reinstalling 26 of the same updates then says unable to
complete uninstalling it all again.
Any ideas as to why or what to do?

Regards, Rene

Sometimes, it's one update, that prevents the rest of the
updates from completely, so they all end up backing out.

In addition to using troubleshooter-type applications,
you can install the updates downloaded separately
from Microsoft. I've done that a few times, to solve
the first "failed" entry. You have to look through
the update history carefully, to understand what
remains to be done. (A "failed" can be followed by
the same number that succeeded, and then it doesn't
need to be fixed as it is already working.)

You can also Google the KB number, to see
if there is a known problem.

Thanks for the reply Paul, I seem to have 3 options to try on Monday.

1. Run the diagnostics repair program. Link supplied by Ken.

2. Go back about 90 updates in history where I recall seeing about 6
"failed" updates and manually reinstalling the bad ones.

3. Leaving the updater set to "Never Update" until The end of July and
Installing Windows 10, which he wants anyway and this should negate the
problem.

I will report results next week.

You can be sure that Microsoft is not going to let you get
away with (3). There will be at least one platform update that
needs to be installed before the upgrade to Win10 can happen.
If your WU is broken now (all new updates "fail" or "pending"),
you can be sure the Upgrade will be blocked. In my opinion, this
would be "because its free", rather than anything else. If you
bought boxed software on August first, that might do an upgrade
install for you. I assume the W10 installation will actually
be delivered via Windows Update, rather than through some other
subsystem.

And don't forget, a "fail" can be followed by a "succeeded", which
can cancel it out. And updates can be recurring as well, so it
is perfectly valid to "succeed" when receiving MSRT every month.

I find this makes it hard to read the log and make sense of it.
But I've had to do just that a few times now. I've never had to
reset everything to "escape".

When you look at the list, you're looking for a "fail" with
no "succeed" to cancel it out. And one of the updates is
then likely to block up the plumbing.

You may miss needed updates for Win 10 if you wait till it comes out.

Here I am back and I can't believe my eyes, The Win 10 icon appeared in
the notification area on its own Sunday morning!!!
Update is still set to Never and there are still 27 updates pending
installation, So I ran the diagnostic program and it showed fixes on 2
registry errors and one other which I didn't catch. reinstalled them
again for the fifth time and now everything seems to be quite on the
Western front :-))
I registered him for the Win10 upgrade and verification shows "Good To Go".
I may Never understand some of the things that Windows Does.

Thanks for your Help all

Regards, Rene

That is why I let Windows upgrade when it wants to. I am a user with a
basic understanding of computers, the OS, and LAN systems. I am not
competent to determine what upgrades to allow and what not to allow.
You never know the side effects from an upgrade, and its inter
dependencies with other system. By letting all upgrades install, I hope
things remain on an even useable keel. If the system does mess up
Microsoft usually issues another upgrade with in a couple of days.

I would rather use my computer for what I bought it for doing research
and writing research papers, that digging into the Register to determine
what is there, and changing it to see what happens.
