Default Beware of latest Versoipn of Free AVG

The latest version does stuff that you probably won't like.
It puts an AVG tool bar on every browser you have abd they're
installed in some manner that even Hijack Pro can't remove them.
(Does a BHO prefis mean something in this regard?)
Also, it has disabled the really nice "Fix Performance" feature.
In it's place, it downloads something names "CleanMyPC".
It's one of many of these things that say something like "found 218
errors on your machine and fixed 10 -- for $27 Ill fisx the rest.".

This is basically a Windows 8 group.

Windows 8 comes stocked-and-standard with a quite reliable AV which
Microsoft updates regularly. You can also choose to - or not to -
participate in an ongoing information sharing process specifically confined
to that utility's purview.

Any other 3rd party AV utility is going to have to smoothly incorporate
itself into your Windows 8 system. Freeware/Free-versions, being what they
are, have historically been prone to some hidden agenda(s).

Until there's a body of *reliable* evidence out bringing WD and/or MSE into
contention for specific issues with specifically Windows 8, I am inclined
to go with the Microsoft vision for my maximized Windows 8 experience.

I do use a 3rd-party software firewall along with my NAT router... A very
small, yet very reliable free one. [Don't want to get accused of spamming
here] actually passes GRC ShieldsUP! and leak testing with flying colors!
Windows 8 doesn't complain about the firewall; rather, actually seems quite
complaisant; turning off the incorporated Windows firewall on its own
volition.

In closing on this tpoic, I'd relate to the readership that you should
beware of ANY 3rd-party AV in Windows 8, mainly because most of the time
you don't realize how infiltrated your OS has become with the AV until it
malfunctions to the point you decide to uninstall it to reinstall, update,
or change to another program -- and *BAMM!!* -- it screws up your entire
system by deleting, leaving and corrupting numerous system files.

FYI

Did you carefully watch the screens and prompts during
installation and deselect any options you didn't want or need?

Did you attempt to uninstall the unwanted components as described
by AVG?

I just uninstalled and found a copy of a clean version

Where did the "unclean version" come from?

The official version still includes 3rd party software offers. How did
you avoid them?

Why doyou feel you need a third part firewall does your router not pass
shieldsUP on its own?

I just downloaded AVG Free from avg.com. I followed the install
instructions and accepted the default of "Express Unstall".

Really? I would have thought you would choose "Custom", just to be safe.

The next panel is the Installer panel and I suspect that this is where
you got caught by the Toolbar trick. In this panel there are 4 boxes
that will accept a tick. The three at the bottom are empty and the one
near the top has already been ticked. You should have removed this
tick if you didn't want the toolbar installed (A mouse click on this
box will do).

Admittedly, this little box does not stand out like the other three. I
have highlighted this at http://tinypic.com/r/311rr09/5 if you want
see where it is in the Installer panel.

As for the Free Trial of "Speed Up Your PC", perhaps you could have
used Google to check what others say about that program.

I have free AVG and, on the main screen, there's a tile labeled "Fix
Performance". If I click it, it brings up PC Analyzer that offers to
scan my computer for registry errors (I use CCleaner for that), junk
files (ditto), broken shortcuts (if I have any, I'll find out as soon as
I click on them!) and do a defragmentation (something I do NOT want to
occur on my SSD)!
