Auto Logon WIndows 8.1 will not work now.
Windows 8.1 64bit
I loaded my PC in Nov 2014 and set the auto login with netplwiz and it worked great. Month or so goes by and it stops. No matter what I do, regedit or netplwiz and any other google suggestion other than loading some 3rd party util (which I didn't), it just won't work. So I reloaded a older backup image of the C: drive and now everything works again. Just had to reset all my data and update programs etc. So after an 8 hour day of updates I'm done. Dang if I didn't do it again. It won't autologin and I know why. I did a logoff rather than shutdown and then of course I get the login screen and have to enter the password. From this point on, the auto login fails. Has anyone found a fix for this. I'd love to fix it rather than go back and reload an image again. I've done so much cleanup (minor stuff) that it would be so much easier to fix it. Al. |

Lastly, take a look at this article, it might provide some assistance: http://www.computerperformance.co.uk...n-registry.htm Personal home PC Windows 8.1 pro. I'm admin and only user. Local network, I've seen that link and it just repeats the same stuff I've read all over the place. Since I posted this thread I've reloaded back one image and subsequently reset all my data and programs. AND DID A NEW IMAGE. :-) I just checked those registry settings and the password entry is not there, but the login works because I set it originally with the netplwiz advanced users setting. This raises a red flag in my mind... if everyone is pointing to this registry entry area to fix the issue, and I don't have all those fields yet it works, then what is what? Things don't jive. Oh yea, every time I create that password field and fill it in, and reboot, the field is gone in the registry. I don't have the event logs now since I reloaded but if it happens again, I'll remember to check. I'm going to export that Winlogon registry settings and save it for compare purposes if this ever comes back. I'm in no hurry to create the issue again, but..... I was kinda hoping to hear from someone that actually had the problem. I've spent too many hours on this and I'm looking for some fix beyond the standard (if you can call them that) procedures. Thanks for the event log hint. |

Third party tools, no matter where they are from, are a security risk. Anyway, try this official link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/turn-on-automatic-logon Good luck. |

And I did a restore of a valid working image and I broke it too. I think it was doing a logout after a ctl-alt-del to get out of what seemed like an endless loop error in a program. But I've since restored a slightly earlier image and have reloaded everything and I'm totally restored and reset and tweaked now and all is quite happy. And YES, I'm not going to do a logoff again!. Not without a reset point or image!! |

I have not yet tested it with Frankenstein (Windows 8) yet, but it does work with Son-of-Frankenstein (Windows 10 preview) so it should work in Frankenstein as well. The remarks will explain how to use it. When you are ready, just double click on it to add it to your registry. You will have to correct the lines that scrolled -T @AutoLogon.bat @echo off rem Create a "reg" file to set an "automatic logon" in Windows XP rem for the current user (%USERNAME%). rem this script presumes the current user has no password. Thanks for the event log hint. It sounds like a local security policy setting to me, you could fire-up gpedit.msc and peruse the current settings. If you are not familiar with local security policies, you might want to read up on them before fingering the settings. Sorry I gave you the "standard procedures", but unless you have some bizarre malware or some really badly behaved software on the computer, the standard procedures are the place to start. One thing (among many) about Windows 8 that sucks is the rapid startup feature. If you shut the machine down, it writes a rapid startup file to the hard drive which allows the machine to start up using the previous configuration without reloading everything from scratch (my terms, I can't remember the MS bull**** jargon). Hybrid boot or something IIRC. If you restart the machine, it does not write or use that file and it reloads from scratch. So, I would make sure I restart in between setting changes. -- Brian Gregory (in the UK). To email me please remove all the letter vee from my email address. |
