I like the Einstein quote! I had not seen this previously. Leave it to Mr.
Einstein to express, in plain language, the crux of Occam's razor.

It sounds like a corollary of Occam's Razor, but when you unpack it you
find it leads in the opposite direction. If Einstein really said or
wrote this, then I can only assume he was being ironical. Which is
highly possible given that he disagreed strongly with the
logical-positivist philosophers of his day. He said that they imposed
too narrow restrictions on science, with their verification requirements.

Oh for the love of Mike....

Ed, you bring to mind two quotes widely attributed to Benjamin Franklin:

1. "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do." -Benjamin
Franklin

2. "Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more
difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."
-Benjamin Franklin

One attributed to Plato:

"Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to
say something." -Plato

And the best for last, attributed to Mark Twain:

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than
to open it and remove all doubt." -Mark Twain

People who can't see right from wrong let people like Jimmy Savile do
their thing.
If only the good people of this world do nothing then the wicked will rule.
A man with an MA in Philosophy is qualified to speak about philosophy.

Kill filters, what a concept.

You'll have to find some other citadel to storm, Norman. It seems that
the citadel of Reason is beyond your grasp.

Yeah, maybe.
As others have said, your English is excellent. To be honest it's better
than the average on Usenet, which makes me wonder at how you ended up
with your "Gr" sig.
You then selected the Einstein quote, and I handled it with all the
academic pedantry I could muster. Which takes us, of course, well beyond
normal usage. I feel at home there because I spent many years studying
philosophy and linguistics, and so I can hold my own in any academic
senior seminar. But (as you've put it so succinctly) such pedantry is
not for normal usage. "Impossible" has one meaning in normal language;
but a different one in logic.

But look how it drew some people out into anger and frustration. I can
understand that too. They're being invited into the higher summits of
intellect, and that is for the few. But (believe you me) such inroads
into language and reason are the norm with the few cognoscenti.

Good luck,

Ed

Something else has occurred to me in this context. Hold on to your
roller-coaster harness because I'm off again.

You sign yourself "Carpe Diem". Now, that is a quote from an old
Augustan poet called Quintus Horatius Flaccus; very famous in his day
and throughout all subsequent ages with Latin scholars.
Dum loquimur, fugerit invida
aetas: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero.
(While we're speaking, envious times will have sped away; seize the day,
trusting as little as possible in the morrow.)

More "impossibility" or an attempt to bring higher culture into everyday
life? You see, some people wear a Latin motto as a badge; some even have
a Latin motto tattoed on their body. But it's a badge only, it's classy
and meant to impress rather than be investigated as to its meaning.
What if I call "pretentious" those people who wear the badge merely for
show without knowing what it means or its history? Are they really
shallow people? Are they posers?

Reason dictates you are either under medicated or over medicated. I
suspect it is the former.

I was about to say +1 when you said that you thought Ed didn't
understand the Einstein quote, but then I decided to just keep my mouth
shut.

But as I read more of Ed's responses (including his two replies to this
post of yours) I decided to chime in after all.

So here's my +1 to both of your posts :-)

Well,... thank you!
"Gr" is (in Flemish, or Dutch, the abbreviation of "Groeten" (English :
Greetings). We are polite people ;-))
But I learned that this is unusual in NGs. So I removed it from my sig.

Good luck,

The same to you.

"To chime in" is new to me (as an expression).
"To chime", I think I understand (bells ringing?)
But "to chime in" ???

So here's my +1 to both of your posts :-)

Don't worry about it. Your written English is not only excellent but it
has the effect of encouraging others to try harder. I think that's why I
pulled out all the stops with my tirades above. I'm no longer a
teenager, but I haven't abandoned all my ideals yet, and I hope I never
will.

Unusual not just in NGs, but in any form of English communication. You
might begin a letter with "Greetings," but never end one that way.

Yes.

But "to chime in" ???

"Chime in" is another colloquial expression for something like "add my
voice to yours."
