Win8.1 installation: drivers missing
Donno if this is purely a Windows issue but because many people have
installed Win8.1 and might have seen this issue before I put it he When I try to install Windows 8.1 I get an error message: "Load Driver - A media driver your computer needs is missing". Then I plug in my flash disk with the latest "RAID_XPWin7-8-8-1_V120010359_130010154_130010220_6125" SATA drivers from Asus web site and from there I browse Driver/Win8.1/AHCI/W864A. After I press OK it seems like its searching something but after a while I get an error: "Load Driver No new devices drivers were found". If I browse the folder "W8" instead , it cannot find any drivers neither. I actually tried all driver folders but none works. Then I have tried to change where my SSD and DVD are in SATA ports but nothing changes. In my Bios seems like its correctly AHCI selected. Any idea how to solve this? My PC: RAM: Corsair 16GB (2x 8GB) PC2400 CL11 Vengeance (CMY16GX3M2A2400C11A) MB: Asus A88X-PRO CPU: AMD A4 5300 |

I somehow doubt AMD RAID would be in the Microsoft installer DVD. You'd probably start with AHCI, install to one disk drive, then do RAID migration. Wikipedia says Windows 8 has changed the name of MSAHCI to "STORAHCI" or something, so this recipe for re-arming the driver detection later (after installation), may need to be updated a bit. The link is where I got the info, and the site may not be around any more (OCZ owned by Toshiba). Each registry key, when loaded, allows the OS to switch to that driver type on a reboot. After a reboot "the door is closed" again until you rearm the ones you want. This allows multiple drivers to be present, and select one or more at boot time, as candidates. http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...p/t-57789.html HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\pciide\Start == 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\msahci\Start == 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\iaStorV\Start == 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\iaStor\Start == 0 Your motherboard has A88X Bolton chipset, total eight SATA ports, of which six are on the motherboard surface, two are on the back on the I/O plate. There are no add-on chips I can see, so we cannot blame an add-on chip for the error message. That leaves the BIOS and change from RAID to AHCI. ******* Another surprise for me, is the presence of a miniport driver on the Asus site, and a claim it is for Windows 8. Windows 8 should have a built-in AHCI driver, which makes the addition of a "driver disk" on the Asus site, a bit strange. Maybe it's intended for RAID or something. I would think you could install with AHCI, re-arm drivers, and get to RAID that way, if that's your eventual destination. And then the icing on the cake, is I don't see any RAID Management package. If they're intending to support RAID, I can't see a user being all too happy doing maintenance on it at BIOS level. Maybe you'd need to search the AMD site and their drivers, for RAID Management software ? It's obvious I don't understand anything about this board. A few curve balls are present. Out of the box, it should have "just worked"... HTH, Paul |

Win8.1 installation: drivers missing
This what I currently think: It starts installing Win8.1, so DVD SATA
logically works, right? So am I right that its not a SATA issue because DVD starts installation and its in SATA port? or SSD uses different kind of SATA? I dont know much about these... But i ll check your earlier questions, back soon... |

I just checked everything from the BIOS and could not find anything "RAID" (on) there. I have: SATA configuration/OnChip SATA type = AHCI (and the next SATA option after that also set to AHCI) so seems like everything is AHCI While you could switch to IDE in the BIOS, and finish the install, I don't know if the driver re-arming is going to work or not. Even if you install the AMD AHCI driver by using the INF, right-clicking and selecting "Install", I don't know if the driver rearm recipe will have an entry that makes the AMD driver a "candidate". This is for a previous OS. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\pciide\Start == 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\msahci\Start == 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\iaStorV\Start == 0 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\servic es\iaStor\Start == 0 OK, in Windows 8, the key has changed from "Start" to StartOverride. I spotted this in Regedit myself, and used it as a search term. And someone went through hell here, by not getting that right ( had to do a "Reset" of the OS). http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...a-cea5e97b8d11 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\storahci\startoverride == 0 And that key is how you use the built-in OS driver for AHCI. The trick would be, if you did manage to get the AMD driver installed, what key would it use ? The "storahci" is for the built-in Windows 8 driver. You have to re-arm, then reboot, to get a new driver to be picked up. So if you cannot currently install Win8, and have to switch to IDE in the BIOS to finish the install, there's still the issue of how you set the rearm to get the AMD AHCI driver to "pick up". If you get it wrong, you can always switch the BIOS back to IDE and I presume it'll be bootable again. In that article above, one of the commenters writes... "I change "StartOverride" to "0" but, once I reboot, it changes back to "3" " And that's exactly how it's supposed to work. The registry setting is a "one-shot". You load a zero in there, and the setting is only considered for one reboot cycle. After that, it sets itself to 3, to prevent "rediscovery". So this recipe must be used every time you try to change drivers. When I've tested this, I tend to set both IDE and AHCI keys. Then the idea is, if I foul up, I still have the choice in the BIOS of selecting either IDE or AHCI. And one of the two registry keys will take effect. So you can arm more than one, if you know you're a butter-fingers. That's how I did mine on an older OS. OK, I had a look at my test machine, and there is no key for this one. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\storahci\startoverride == 0 However, I can see things like this: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\PciIDE\startoverride\0 == 3 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\iastorAV\startoverride\0 == 3 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\iastorV\startoverride\0 == 3 So those three are ready to be re-armed. Why doesn't my storachi have one ? More weirdness... ******* I had another look at that driver with the INF, and I don't know about it. The applicable OS is "6.2" and I think that's Windows 7. The date is 2013. I'm just not feeling very warm about the applicability of that driver. It should tell you it's not for that OS. Something doesn't add up here - the process shouldn't be that hard. My new build last year, installed immediately, and there were no dramatic events. And I was probably installing my Windows 8.1 image and using the rollups after that. Paul |

Do SSD drives normally work without problems from the box with Win8.1? Or they need to be prepared? |
