Tell us what you find...

because any of these articles could be out-of-date.

For me, it's apparently :

C:\Users\Stephen\AppData\LocalLow\Google\GoogleEar th\myplaces.kml

When myplaces.kml is double clicked, it just seems to launch Google
Earth Pro.

Not sure what the significance of myplaces.kml, except to store place
locations, which is a lot, and was my original question. It's now
added to my routine backups, along with C:\Program Filed (x86)\Google.

Thanks Paul,
Steve

As a guess, the file is actually XML, which can
be read by a text editor.

I don't have a file handy to verify this.

Images of earth have been provided in the past
by Keyhole satellites. Such as KH-11. I doubt
"normal" earth surveys are done that way.

*******

OK, here's confirmation of the kooky origins :-)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Earth

"Users may use the program to add their
own data using Keyhole Markup Language"

"Google Earth was originally developed by Keyhole, Inc.,
a Mountain View-based company founded in 2001. Keyhole,
after being spun off from Intrinsic Graphics, received
funding from the Central Intelligence Agency's venture
capital firm, In-Q-Tel and the National
Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, in addition to smaller
capital from Nvidia and Sony. Keyhole developed the
program under the name Keyhole EarthViewer, and sold the
product for uses in fields such as real estate,
urban planning, defense, and intelligence. Google acquired
the company in 2004"

Paul
