Alternatives To Desktop Restore 6.x ?
Desktop Restore was working for me under XP but now, under Windows 7
with two monitors it can't seem to get the restores right: icons missing, icons relocated all over the place, and so-forth. Has anybody found something that works for them with two monitors ? -- Pete Cresswell |

Has anybody found something that works for them with two monitors ? According to http://www.midiox.com/, Windows 7 is listed as supported. Are you using the latest version (1.6.4.036)? At Softpedia.com, a reviewer noted "If an Icon has the same name as the beginning of ANOTHER icon name (i.e. "ABCD" vs "ABCD FILE") the program sometimes misplaces one with another and randomly places the other. I dont think the authors know about this." The only one that I constantly remember is Stardock's Fences (http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/). Never used a desktop layout manager but others have noted it is very good. Some more info at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fences_%28software%29. It is not free but then you did not mention any pricing criteria. Cost is $10. You can get a trial version to check if it works how you want. See: http://www.stardock.com/products/fences/ For multiple monitors, I've read that you need to enable the "Store fence sizes and positions on a per-screen-resolultion basis" setting. |

I tried the highly recommended ICU but gave up on it because it did exactly what you pointed out. (For what it's worth, at the suggestion of someone in this newsgroup, I checked the Desktop folder and found that the missing icons were there; they "just" didn't show up on the Desktop, presumably having been placed off-screen.) Mention of multiple monitors with DesktopOK: http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=1692 Per DesktopOK website http://www.softwareok.com/?seite=Freeware/DesktopOK "DesktopOK does not have to be installed and can be executed easily from the desktop, and can be carried on a small usb-stick or other memory device. Start the program. The first time that you use it the program it will present you with a license screen. The program is free and the license info is only displayed the first time (per PC)." Alternatives To Desktop Restore 6.x ?
Per (PeteCresswell):
I will give that one a try and report back after a few restores. Nice product IMHO. Funny thing, though: StarDock fails to tout the save/restore functionality in their web pages. I looked.... and looked... but did not find. Said functionality seems to me exceptionally good. I just had to take a leap of faith, buy the product, and then dig down to discover it. It's quick, it's reliable (so far, anyhow....), and all the desktop snapshots are presented in thumbnail format so you can look before you leap... There also seems to be a lot of additional functionality that I can't even comprehend much less use. But ten bucks for a usable, reliable Desktop backup/restore utility is a deal in and of itself. Thanks for the recommendation. -- Pete Cresswell |

Alternatives To Desktop Restore 6.x ?
Per (PeteCresswell):
Nice product IMHO. One fly in the ointment - not a beeeeeg fly... but a significant one: there is no way to turn AutoArrange off for a fence. You can disable sorting.... but there's no way to make icons stay in the position you drop them... the sequence is preserved, but they always jamb up into a contiguous list. Seems like a hot subject with some users over the past 5 years or so.... But StarDock is pretty hard-nosed about not implementing it.... they sound committed to icons auto-arranging when a Fence is re-sized. Not exactly a religious issue... but a significant irritant - almost as much by being so obviously a flaw as anything else. But, like I said, I bought a desktop Save/Restore tool... and, as convenient as Fences might be, I can live without them and the Save/Restore functionality justifies the ten bucks for me. -- Pete Cresswell |

Cannot speak of DesktopRestore, but it looks like Fences has an option to scale the desktop to accommodate different resolutions and monitors of different sizes. -- Pete Cresswell |

Sorry, can only comment on one-monitor system: Desktop Restore 1.6.3.031 aquired this month is working fine in new Windows 7 Pro. ] (but what a nightmare it's been to get Win7 set up ! ) (now if backup and repair disk will ever work ... wish me luck) |
