Router password

I have misplaced my router password. I know it is saved somewhere in
my Win 7 computer --- because I don't need to reset for power outages etc.
Where in my Win 7 computer is the router code stored?

The router does not store the password in your PC. It stores it within
the router itself.

I do not know how other brands of router handle this, but my Netgear
router has a factory reset button. It requires a thin rod (e.g., the
end of a paperclip) to reach and push the button. After doing that, the
user ID is "admin", which cannot be changed; and the password is
"password", which can be changed. I changed the password immediately
after I setup my router, and I change it again periodically.

Do you mean
a) the password to log in to the router to get line statistics,
configure port forwarding etc. etc. ?

or

b) the WiFi password (or "pass phrase") you need to connect to the WiFi
the router provides?

the password.

Best to just re-set the router and assign a new password.

That happens to not be entirely true. Firefox and other browsers do
store the router password and userid combination if you tell them to,
assuming you have used the browser login page at some time.
"Tools/Options/Security/Remember logins for sites" or "File",
"preferences" .... or some similar combination.
You will need to click on the "show passwords" and "yes, you nagging
little bugger I really *DO* want to do this" buttons.

Standard passwords may be "1234", "0000", "admin", "Administrator" or
something equally secure. The factory reset password may even be on a
label stuck to the router.
If everything else fails, calling your ISP helpdesk is a good move.
They can either supply the default password or reset it remotely. Once
they have done this, changing it using the web page interface is easy.
*ALWAYS* change it immediately after resetting it to the default.
Leaving the default in makes your network very, very open to
exploitation.

You need a to change b or c. You need b to even get access so you can
enter a, if you're connecting by wifi, but not if you're (even
temporarily) connecting by cable (which is one option if you forget b).

For a the username is often admin and the password admin (again) or
password, so it is indeed a good idea to change those. For b they're
often on a label on the router, if you haven't changed them. For c,
you'll need to look at the paperwork provided by your ISP - _don't_ do a
"factory reset" (paperclip) if you _don't_ have a note of these, if it's
a router other than one provided by your ISP. (If it is, it _may_ be
configured such that resetting it resets to the right thing. But it may
not!)

To answer the original question: a is probably stored in your browser,
if you have it configured to store passwords. The wifi one b is stored
with the network connections alongside the SSID (wifi network name),
though I'm not sure you can tell Windows to show it as other than blobs.
The ADSL details c are AFAIK _only_ stored in the router.

own.

Yes, always change it from the default. Change WiFi SSIDs too.

BTW, about 10 years ago I found THREE wireless networks around here. ALL
called "Linksys" and with no security. Most are doing better now.
