Thanks for this suggestion for all of us for Network Meter Version 9.6.
http://addgadgets.com/network_meter/

The exe file had a bad address so it failed to download.
http://inst.avg.com/serve/dyndl.php?...er_V9.6.gadget

The zip file downloaded just fine.
http://addgadgets.com/download/Network_Meter.zip

The zip unzipped to a single file with a my first "gadget" extension.

Name: Network_Meter_V9.6.gadget
Size: 351086 bytes (0 MB)
SHA256: 7D5118513140ACE28C09B895EE548FE6ADB9A311DE44621D35 E63C6F6B675D39

On Windows, how do we run a "gadget" extension file?
Mine comes up asking me what to open it with.

The virustotal entry tells you exactly what it is.

TRiD Microsoft Vista Sidebar Gadget (CAB - Obsolete) (79.4%)
Microsoft Cabinet Archive (20.5%)

Gadgets were discontinued half-way through Windows 7, presumably
to help sell copies of Windows 8 :-) Microsoft suddenly
"discovered" they were an attack surface - who knew ?

And those components are similar to what a Metro App uses.
The exception being, that the checks and balances are
probably a bit stronger. A Metro App is added from
the Microsoft Store, not from some download you did
from CNET. Curation in the Store is supposed to improve
the security on blobs like that.

If your gadgets aren't working in Windows 7, there's an article for that.
