Default Icons in sys tray

Why do my system icons in the task bar (lower right) sometimes show and
other times not. The apps that should show but don't are running in the back
ground. I have to bring up the task manager, kil the app and associated
threads then restart theapp manually to get the icon to show and stick. This
is a real bother. Clues?

Try Right Clicking on the taskbar and going to the properties,
then uncheck "Hide inactive icons"

I have tried that numerous times already. I have been around these thingss
for quite a while and have tried all the normal clicks and clacks. I have
gotten into
the registry to try and seek out any key corruptions. Any other clues?
Thanks Alex for the first speedy reply though

Right click the start button select properties then taskbar and have a poke
around with the "hide inactive buttons" feature. That might be what you're
after.

I have the same problem, but only with Mailwasher when loaded on start-up.
My "Hide inactive icons" is and has been unchecked.

It can get in a tangle. I suggest going to Kelly's site
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util
and download TaskBar Repair Tool Plus. It has a section for repairing
this Tray (formally Notification area) and starting it over. Note that
if you start up Hide inactive icons it usually takes a day or two for it
to work things out; I usually set them as either Always show or Always
hide

Did that- now I have even less icons in the notifacation area, although
Mailwasher is there.

This a major bug with XP since the beginning and usually happens when you ask too much resources of your PC (building of large number of icons, opening or closing windows etc..). You will notice that they suddenly disappear after an "action". It simply cannot be solved and I have this problem since the beginning and over several installs and reinstalls of XP. Of course you have to uncheck the option "hide inactive icons ". The Kellys Korner tool mentioned and called "Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!" can't solve this problem; and believe me I've installed it as a last resort. The only way to make the icons reappear is indeed to close the app.(eventually with taskmanager) and reopen them. Or you can simply reboot and hope that all the icons load which isn't always the case. Read also about this topic somewhere else in this forum and my identical remarks.
