Marks Marks did some thinking and came up with these words: Hi All, Recently I noticed that my system tray icons left only one shown and the rest disappear, I have check all to "Always show", can anyone here give me a help? Thanks Marks Right click the Taskbar and choose Properties. Is there a check in the box for "Hide inactive icons?" If so - remove the check and it should clear the issue. -- Ron Bogart {} τΏτ¬ Associate Expert Expert Zone - www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone "Life is what happens while we are making other plans." |

What may have happened is that the icon cache has become corrupt. Download
the XP version of Microsoft Powertoys and install TweakUI. The last item in the TweakUI menu- Repair, has an option to 'Rebuild icons'. Pick that one, reboot , and it should take care of the problem. It can get in a muddle (and BTW it has nothing to do with the 'icon cache'). Kelly has a Taskbar repair tool on her site - http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_u.htm#xp_util and top line, and I suggest giving that a try -- Alex Nichol MS MVP (Windows Technologies) Bournemouth, U.K. (remove the D8 bit) |

Has indeed nothing to do with icon cache. Now we're talking about the "system tray" R and not the shortcuts on the L in the taskbar.
This system tray icons disappearing is a permanent problem that I've had now since the beginning (different reinstalls of XP on different HD). Sometimes not all the icons load at startup (the ones that always load are the AV and firewall icons !). If I see one that's not loaded at startup I go to the TaskMan and close the program then reopen it and always the icon appears. While the PC is running they mostly disappear (not all), without reappearing if the PC has much graphic work to do. A reboot puts them back of course. The Kelly utility can only bring them back "once", but the next time the PC is under heavy strain it's the same old thing. I've come to live with this problem and as long as I don't ask to much of my OS they stay there. Quote:

System Tray Icon Disappear
I'm having the same issue as guydpb but am choosing not to accept it as
readily. My laptop is a virtually new Dell with plenty of power to run what I need and the sys tray icons are not loading on the initial boot. After a log out and log back in they all come up but this is rediculous that after a few months they would just quit loading... this is with the system set for faster performance and no "pretty XP" features turned on. If anyone has any more specific input as to how to go about fixing this issue please chime in. Thanks much. - Paul "Guydpb" wrote: Has indeed nothing to do with icon cache. Interesting to notice that even PC's with enough "resources" have the same problem (mine is only 1Gb and 500Mb SDram). The thing I do now is the following: I let autostart as few programs automatically on start up, this way there are few icons that have to be loade on startup. Start the programs one by one; if an icon disappears while working it doesn't mean the programs closed. Just hit Ctrl-Alt-delete, close the program and restart it, the icon will reappear i/t systray. And remember as mentioned the "Kelly program" does not solve this issue. Neither can Dell change anything about it. It's Microsoft's OS. There's a very good program (freeware) to watch and uncheck the start up items at www.mlin.net called "Startup monitor". Hope this helps. |

System Tray Icon Disappear
Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon
users. Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.
