The control on your monitor should do this.

The buttons should be along the bottom of the unit. Find the manual for
your monitor as random pushing of them can really foul things up.

You may find a brightness setting in control panel, display, settings,
advanced, graphics tab. (With my Intel graphics drivers, it's under
graphics properties button, color tab.)

On my Samsung Syncmaster the long way is....

Right click desktop and select properties
Select Setting tab
Click Advanced button
Select nView tab
Click Device Settings button - colour correction

...which includes a brightness slider

Greetings --

What happens when you adjust the Brightness and Contrast controls
on the front of the monitor?
