Default enable compression

Hello,
I am trying to format a secondary hard drive (my D: drive if that makes a
difference). When the format box pops up one of the Format Option boxes is
"Enable Compression." What is this and is it recommended?

Jason,
What andrew said is absolutely right. The compression option in the format
dialog tells xp to format the drive to compress any file created or stored
there. The downside to this is that the files need to be decompressed first
before they are accessed. So you do get a bit more free space but that is at
the expense of your computer's performance.
