There is absolutely nothing wrong with McAfee OR Norton. People that continue to say that haven't used either program in the past 2 years or so. I haven't used either of them in far longer than 2 years, and it'll be far longer than 2 years before I trust either of them again. Both have completely squandered any good will they might have once had by producing total crap for a decade. If they want to be accepted again, they'll have to totally reinvent themselves, starting with the company name. |

Since we're not all USENET veterans, care to explain what a PUP is? http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/PUP.html Thank you, however I can't help but wonder what the "unwanted" programs in Mcafee's suite are. After all, if all that you want is the anti-virus, you're free to install that alone. In my case, I like the anti-virus, the firewall and the vulnerability scanner (which lets me know if some of my programs have updates available) which is why they are the only ones I install. -- Slimer Proud "wintroll" Encrypt. |

And, I happen to USE Norton on one computer and McAfee on another one. So I know they both work very well. Really, every AV works until you get hit. I have used a program for years, that most have not heard of. Years ago many people used NOD32 and Outpost Firewall. They still do, to some extent. Those programs had trouble working together for many users, when Windows 7 came out. I switched to Outpost Security Suite and still use it. It has nothing to do with "getting hit". For years McAfee and Norton were resource hogs. That is no longer the case. No AV program is foolproof, but people can be fools in what they choose to download |

Per Ron:
No AV program is foolproof, but people can be fools in what they choose to download Only infection I have had to deal with was on the daughter's desktop PC. Avast threw up it's huge "Warning...Infected....You don't really want to open this...." (in so many words) dialog but my macho son-in-law just *had* to click "Yes".... Can't recall the name of the virus, but had to rebuild the box from scratch - and others reported the same experience. -- Pete Cresswell |

A couple of years ago I fixed my little brothers laptop using the recovery partition, and 2 days later he had boinked it again. It is now in my mom's possession and he sticks to his android tablet and phone. |

Company I work for banned both of those about a year ago due to ineffectiveness and bloat. Thousands of computers. We got tired of the constant virus infiltrations from remote users getting into the servers. We now use an enterprise quality anti-virus ware and it's expensive. So far our computers and servers have been virus free (crosses fingers and knocks on plastic wood). |

I don't have any virus shields on the home computers - not needed, they don't get viruses, but I use the free Sophos scanner once a week along with Malware bytes, and a complete system scan of all computers once per month with Kaspersky 10 boot disk. |
