Default Update your software now!

June 13, 2019

https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/blog/20...r-software-now

We secure our valuables – our wallets, keys, and homes. We know that, if
left unsecured, they can easily be a target for criminals. So it makes
sense to think the same way about the information stored on all our devices.

Computers, tablets, phones and other personal devices hold your emails
and your financial and tax documents (with your Social Security
numbers). Criminals who get access to this valuable information can
commit identity theft, put harmful software on your devices, or both.

What’s one easy way to help protect all of this sensitive information?
Update your software regularly, and as soon as possible when a newer
version comes out. What’s an even easier way? Set the updates to happen
automatically. Don’t ignore reminders to update. Criminals look to
exploit vulnerabilities before the software companies can fix it.
Delaying gives hackers time to access your information – even when a
patch is out there to lock them out.

So what software should you be updating?

Security software. Whether you use antivirus or firewall programs that
were pre-installed on your device or that you bought on your own, make
sure they’re up to date.

Operating system software. Your operating system could be Windows, Apple
OS, etc. If you’re not sure how to update your operating system, go to
the website of your device manufacturer for help.

Internet browsers and apps. Both are access points for criminals to
enter your devices, so it’s important to keep them secure.

Tells me about the FTC, which on the whole I agree does good work.
Though it's a US agency [and you and I are UK]. (That page doesn't
include the word "Specialist" though. It was the job title that sounded
a bit iffy to me, not the FTC.)

David is "improving his karma points" by posting
copies of fluffy vapid "advertising".

When a person reads that FTC thing, what exactly are they supposed
to do ? Run in circles with their arms waving frantically
above their head ?

I think these FTC adverts ara available as a cologne and
as a stick deodorant. Applying the advertisement
doesn't actually do anything, but you smell *GREAT*
afterwards.

I personally don't think it *IS* fake. What is YOUR opinion, please?

FWIW ....

My 'friend' mentioned in that thread is middle-aged lady in Oklahoma,
USA, with whom I've enjoyed a number of Skype video conversations, and
who has used a very old laptop with Windows XP to do so.

In my opinion she'd have been better advised by '...winston' to buy a
new machine rather than continue using her old one. Exactly in
accordance with the advice given by the FTC! ;-)

Yes, but sounds at best "salesman", and at most insulting (to those he
interacts with, not to him) "teacher of idiots", i. e. someone whose job
is to tell stupid people what to do. Which, since I don't consider
myself to be _that_ stupid, means I don't feel obliged to listen to what
someone with that job title says. (And since I don't think _most_ of
{those in the two of the three 'groups you posted to that I take} are
stupid either, I was wondering why it was relayed there.)
