I find that many freeware programs come with two options ticked on the download form; one is Chrome, the other Google as search engine. You have to UNtick them in order NOT to get them. It's a pain; and look how it drives me into using unorthodox English just to cover the situation. Ed |

This computer is used daily, but it runs Linux Mint 99% of the time. I just keep Window 8.1 up to date. |

It's probably from Dell. Also, there are two pieces of software. There is Chrome and there is Chromium (open source version). Each is a slightly different installation. I had one other user report something strange like this, Chromium showing up, and I wasn't aware there was even a promotional campaign for Chromium. It's even hard to find a copy when you want one for test. (The web site for Chromium is a mess, and suited to dev types.) One of the hints of a "sneaky" install method, is when your Programs and Features has no entry for it. You could try Revo to remove it. Or, if you locate the setup.exe it uses (next to a 7Z copy it keeps for reinstall purposes), the setup.exe command accepts options to remove it. if a chromium installation: setup.exe --uninstall if a chrome installation: setup.exe --uninstall --multi-install --chrome --system-level look for a folder containing at least these two, for a place to run that command from. You cd /d /path/to/these/files before running the setup.exe command. chrome.7z ~150MB setup.exe ~ 1MB HTH, Paul |

You updated something else that bundled Google Chrome (and did so as foistware which is bundleware that is opted in by default). You have to watch those installer screens and elect a custom install, if available, to avoid the foistware. For example, if you updated Adobe Flash without watching the installer screens then you installed Google Chrome. |

For example, if you updated Adobe Flash without watching the installer screens then you installed Google Chrome. Or worse, McAfee. Very true :-) That's what I'm always offered. Some of the sneakier downloads don't show anything until you start the installation; the foist-ware is included without advising the user of it, then has an accept/decline screen during the installation of the program. I got fooled on one of them a few years back and have been extremely careful in reading each screen during the installation process. As The Who sang, "Won't get fooled again. . ." :-) -- SC Tom |

Most likely something from Cnet or another place. I got Chrome installed when it was from cnet & wasn't prompted as an option. Not only that, but had to do the "take ownership" in order for me to delete the stuff as it was "owned" by the "installer"??? |

Not only that, but had to do the "take ownership" in order for me to delete the stuff as it was "owned" by the "installer"??? You didn't have to do that. Chrome is actually a bit tricky though. It consists of the program itself, but it also leaves a GoogleUpdate service on the machine. *That* you have to deal with separately. By description, GoogleUpdate is supposed to uninstall, if all Google products have been removed from the computer, but you know that isn't going to happen. It's better for Google to be slimy, and leave it running. To remove Chrome, the trick is to find the setup.exe that belongs to the program. It is right next to the "chrome.7z" file, which is around 150MB, and contains everything needed for an install (or uninstall) operation. By Googling around, I was able to find these suggestions. if a chromium installation: setup.exe --uninstall if a chrome installation: setup.exe --uninstall --multi-install --chrome --system-level I don't know what happens if you use Revo, whether it also takes care of GoogleUpdate for you or not. ******* When Apple leaves their Updater running on a computer, it will pop up an alert, that looks like an iTunes update, when in fact it delivers other Apple Software. I don't have a soft spot in my heart, for this sort of behavior. I don't know if the GoogleUpdater does that sort of thing or not. Also, these updaters can be hidden in SVCHOST. So if you happen to look in Task Manager, and you cannot see such an animal, it is also possible for slimy companies to run it as a service and hide it in a SVCHOST. Doing "tasklist /svc" or using Process Explorer, can sometimes provide the extra info you need. HTH, Paul |

You need to find the "offline" updater, to help you avoid adware. And the funny part is, I get reports like this in the groups all the time, and when I try to reproduce them... Oracle refuses to send me Google Chrome. I get other stuff instead on offer. So I've never actually been infected (as part of a test case), using Java. And I can't figure out why I'm not a good target. There is no Chrome on the machine, so my "scalp is worth a buck" to Oracle. Paul |
