Using Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, when I check using Windows Update, there is nothing besides
Defender updates--is that what others are experiencing?

Well, let's take a look in catalog.update.microsoft.com

Search terms:

Windows 7 Cumulative [sort by date]
Windows 7 Quality [sort by date]

Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11
for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4074736)
Windows 7 Security Updates 2/13/2018 n/a 52.4 MB

2018-02 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB4074598)
Windows 7 Security Updates 2/13/2018 n/a 233.9 MB

This one should really be in the optional section.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 for Windows 7 for x64 (KB4033342)
Windows 7 Feature Packs 2/13/2018 n/a 77.1 MB

That's just a quick sample to prove there should
be something for you.

I generally wait a week or more to see what other users experience with
new updates. I am currently holding the following:

Security and Quality Update for .NET Framework 3.5.1, 4.5.2, 4.6, 4.6.1,
4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1 (KB4076492; includes KB4054998, KB4054992, and KB4054981)
Security Quality Update for Windows 7 (KB4074598)

KB4054998 replaces KB4049016 and KB4041083.
KB4054992 and KB4054981 together replace KB4042076 and KB4035036.

Security Update for Microsoft Office 2007 (KB4011715)

KB4011715 replaces KB 4011201.
