I bought a Linx 10" tablet with Win8.1. It worked beautifully for some
time; until I went to Windows Updates and found 70+ waiting. I started
update for them all, but ran out of time and stopped the process. Now
when I boot up it takes my password and blacks out the screen. It's locked.
I use the same MS account as with my PCs, have checked them all and they
work, have been to the MS site and logged in with that password. All ok
except the Linx tablet.

Has anybody got any suggestions?

I don't have that device. Since it is using Windows, doesn't Windows
still provide a boot menu (hit F8 after POST screen) where you can
choose to to load into Windows' safe mode? Do that to see if you can
get into safe mode. Then reboot to get back into normal mode. If that
doesn't work, use the "Last Known Config" choice in the boot menu.

Just wait at the blank screen, maybe 30 mins or more. I suspect it's
working in the background.

My Win 8.1 does similar from time to time if updates are in progress at
shut-down. It appears to be a very annoying 'sticking' of the boot screen
or notification, although it does not occur every time...

I thought the path to Safe Mode, was torturous on Win8.

Some mention here of no "Last Known Good" on Win8... Yikes.

Not much of a manual.

http://linx-tablets.com/linx-10.html

Someone mentioned recently, that these 32GB storage devices
are using "WIMBoot", where effectively the installation .wim
file is kept compressed, and when windows needs a file, it is
decompressed from the .wim and used. So the behavior and
availability of restoration procedures could be a bit
different.

http://blogs.windows.com/itpro/2014/...-boot-wimboot/

"And the same WIM file (which is read-only, never being changed
in this process) can also be used as a recovery image, in case
you want to reset the computer back to its original state."

So even with only 32GB of storage from the factory, there is a
3GB file in a separate partition, which is install.wim.

I'm having trouble finding a good reference on recovering
a WIMboot machine. But there's a suggestion here...

http://en.community.dell.com/support...586/t/19494490

Recover your tablet

Turn off your tablet.

Press and hold the Volume-up button and then press the
Power and Sleep/Wake button to turn on the tablet.

Release the Volume-up button when
"Attempting to boot from Windows Recovery..."
is displayed on the upper left corner of the display.

Follow the on-screen instructions to refresh or reset your tablet.

If the tablet was properly prepared by the manufacturer, there are
two .wim files. The winre.wim (probably 200MB) is what supports
the recovery console. If your machine didn't have one, you could
try booting a recovery CD using a USB CD/DVD/drive - but the
question there would be, whether the Linx tablet is using
Secure Boot and would allow such a thing. So the built-in
Recovery Console had better work.

I'd hoped to see such info in the Linx manual, which is why
I went to the Linx site in the first place. But the manual
is wonderfully devoid of useful info.

OK, a possible hint here.

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...8641103&page=2

"with the tablet off press
volume up and power
until you see the boot menu"

Then see if "Attempting to boot from Windows Recovery" shows up,
as that may have menu items for Refresh/Reset. On a WIMBoot PC,
all that should do is remove the linked files in the OS partition,
as the install.wim doesn't need to be touched (it's always read-only).

But there's a difference between a "black" screen and a "gray" screen.
My Windows 8 sits at a gray screen for a minute or two sometimes (not
even after an update). But the fact the screen is gray and the video
card driver seems to be working, assures me there's no need to get
excited.

I've also had perfectly black screen on Windows 8, and "it's dead Jim"
was the conclusion in that case. With no BSOD, there's no opportunity
for the OS to communicate with you and hint as to what happened. If
I see some "gray", I just wait a few minutes.

A well designed computing device, should have a LED for disk
activity, so you can correlate "it's dead JIm" with the activity
light. On a cheap tablet, I'm sure every nickel of product cost
is important, so why bother with LEDs.

Hello Paul. You're fully on the ball as usual.
I just can't find how to boot into any recovery coinsole at all. The
volume-up button and power just boots to the same screen as power alone;
as does, incidentally, the volume-down.

There is a recovery partition on the SSD; 4+GB. I saw it there in disk
management. But it looks (and I can hardly believe this!) that the only
way to restore to factory settings is from inside Windows.
Somebody tell me I'm wrong. I must be. But until I find how to do it I'm
stuck.

With the tablet off, press and hold Volume UP, then press Power.
Keep pressing Volume UP until "Attempting to boot from Windows Recovery...".

The reason I suggest that, is if you keep pressing Power, maybe it'll
shut down again. But you could safely continue to hold down the Volume UP
button, until you see the "Attempting..." appear. Consider the Volume Up
in this case, to be like a shift key.

It's gone back to the store, and I got a refund. They played around with
it for half an hour and concluded that it was "faulty". Currys UK.
Ah, ah. The level of know-how they displayed was quite incredibly low;
really frustrating for me and my level of insight, but for you it would
have been like talking to infants.

A pity really. While it was working it was pretty good. I only got it,
however, because it runs Windows and I use the Diogenes project a lot;
https://community.dur.ac.uk/p.j.hesl...enes/index.php

However (and this is a big "however") I rang up Currys Central to make
sure that the drive was wiped before being returned to the
manufacturers. The chap I talked to said it would be, and he sounded so
intelligent that I talked to him about the problem. He said that the way
to reset a Windows tablet was thus;
1. Call up virtual keyboard
2. Hold shift and press reset on power options
3. Recovery screen appear

The volume-up + power button technique is for android.

Cripes! Well, I'm going to see if I can get Diogenes on either of my
iPad or Samsung Galaxy tablets (iOS & android); maybe some app to run
Windows. If not I might just get another Linx10.

Thanks for your guidance,

Ed

How did you see the recovery partition if you're locked out? Was it seen
before the problem?

Is there a way to boot external media (via flash drive or PXE)?

I use the same MS account as with my PCs, have checked them all and they
work, have been to the MS site and logged in with that password. All ok
except the Linx tablet.

Has anybody got any suggestions?

this anywhere.

I realised sic when I had the keyboard dock connected to the tablet and i
sic pressed ESC when the Linx logo appeared it entered me into the AMI bios
; which was great! When i sic tried accessing the bios the 'normal way' by
going "Change UEFI firmware settings" it just took me to a Windows recovery
menu with no text, blank buttons, messages etc

Hope this helped anyone get into the BIOS with ease XD"

"realised" is the accepted spelling in England, and that one plus all
the other sics made the quote harder to read than the errors that they
flagged would have.

As usual, I love to give an opinion :-)

No invitation is needed - which reminds me that I have friends who will
tell you all their health issues without even being asked. I promise not
to plague you with mine, however.

You have the PLAGUE????? Can we bloch this guy from infecting all of us?
I don't think that antimalware and antivirus programs work against the
plague! Maybe a childhood vaccination may have helped????
