Default OEM Versions

I have not yet had the problem but still have to update
my fathers HP to SP2. I have read where people cannot
reboot and what needs to be done to reboot it is by
inserting the XP CD and go into recovery console. With an
OEM version, how would I do this. In HP anyway, there is
a place you can create a recovery disk, mine was 6 CD's,
but am not sure if this would work for getting into
recovery console. Hope this makes some kind of sense. If
this does not work, how would I be able to get the
computer to boot up so I can fix the troubles?
Thanks alot.

Advanced planning!
What a novel idea not usually seen in the computer user world!
)

I agree - numerous annoyances with SP2 have had me "[x] Do not show this
update again" on my machine - I am waiting for all the dust to settle before
taking the leap. Some report no problems whatsoever, other seem to report
catastrophic failures. I can't afford the latter, but I *can* afford to
wait... ha.

You can apparently uninstall SP2 if you find it gives you trouble. MAKE
SURE you only install it once (for wathever reason...). If you go crazy and
install it twice, you can only uninstall to the first install, and you're
still stuck with it.

You can boot to SAFE MODE to fix/troubleshoot most problems by pressing F8
while your machine is powering up and selecting the appropriate menu item
which pops up. NOTE: Sometimes you will need to press F8 at just the right
moment during power up. If you see the Windows XP splash screen (the
loading screen with the rolling dots...) you missed it. Reset and try
again - for the layman, it's often easier if you just keep whacking the F8
key as soon as you power on, until you get the menu. Funny but true.

Good luck.

Recovery console can be obtained by booting from the XP boot floppies.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseid=33290 Home
Edition
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/r...eleaseid=33291 Pro
Edition
You will need 6 blank formatted floppies to create the set.

Keep in mind that this version of the Recovery Console is limited in
function compared to the one created by using the CD.

For the original poster: As you have not upgraded yet (good planning on your
part), and the I386 folder normally found on the CD is probably on your
Dad's machine, I would suggest you install the Recovery Console as a boot
option before doing the upgrade. I believe the I386 folder in his system is
under the Windows directory, so to install you would enter this from a
start/run prompt:

C:\Windows\I386\winnt32 /cmdcons

This will give you an option to choose the Recovery Console at boot should
something go wrong.

Depending on the HP system determines what kind of restore media you
received with your purchase.
I recently purchased a low end HP laptop that shipped with not only restore
disks, but a HP Branded XP Home CD. The Branded HP XP Home CD is as far as I
can determine an exact XP OEM Home CD that can do a repair or clean install
without the need to activate as long as the setup recognizes the BIOS.
You need to thoroughly research your purchases and decide what you require
determined by cost and resources provided. If you don't do your homework,
and your purchase is less than you expected, it is your fault. If you
researched your purchase and did not receive what you negotiaciated , then
you have a real beef and should seek a settlement.

You should consult HP's web site. They have such heavily customised
hardware, with special versions of some system components that you have
to be very cautious before updating. OEM versions are sometimes retail
ones with a different setup program and no more, or more often than not
special CDs that will only restore an image of the ex-factory state to
the machine. That is of little help in a repair. What HP generates in
making recovery CDs I do not exactly know, but it is likely not to be
the same as a regular CD - especially if it takes more than one.
